Like light summer winds aren't bad enough. We have been dealing with this the last few years, this season it really has seemed to have amped up! Enjoy it where you are at, you could be dealing with this!
Here is the Wikipedia def: Microcystins are toxic peptides, produced in large quantities during blooms of the cyanobacteria genera Microcystis or Planktothrix.[3] Cyanobacterial blooms, often called blue-green algae bloom, can cause oxygen depletion, alter food webs, posing a major threat to drinking and irrigation water supplies, and to fishing and recreational use of surface waters worldwide
It was so bad that last week in Toledo, OH. we had a water emergency that affected more than 400,000 people, a no contact of any kind from the drinking water supply.
It goes without saying that there is more pressure than ever not to blow that jibe!

My understanding is that it is from a combination of factors. Our end of Lake Erie is pretty shallow & the Maumee River feeds it chemical run off from farm fields, our citys old waste water treatment plant contributes to the problem & pesticides from our lawns. When the wind shuts off Erie is not getting churned up enough to dilute it. It's been decades in the making & supposedly there is no quick fix. Here is a link to the website that monitors the bloom. http://www2.nccos.noaa.gov/coast/lakeerie/bulletin/bulletin_current.pdf
I have to admit, you have to think twice about getting in it when it's green capping-no joke! Below are pics of what the water looked like 2 years ago when we showed up to ride & Toledo's water intake a few days ago surrounded by the toxic algae.

Western basin is 1/5 of Lake Erie. Average depth about 25 feet. Nitrogen runoff from farms, shallow water, very confined. Yikes! Bigwave, is the Lake warmer than average? I would think not given this Winter and Spring. Which makes me wonder, why so bad this year? Farmers pushing yield?

You are correct the water temp is actually a little less than normal & we are also running above average on the water level. We've been basically windless for much of July/early August so I'm sure that also contributes to the problem. It was predicted that this years bloom was going to be very bad, I believe they predicted that due to our very wet spring(increased run off?)

Said it before and will say it again... every 4 days there is another million humans on the planet. You can only put so many fish in a fish tank before they start dying. How many humans can the fish tank earth handle?

I hear you wdsurf soon we're going to have to start heading your way(its hard to get out of work though & drive a few hours for a "quick session") or make the 3-4 hour drive to Lake Michigan. Agreed WaterKook there is no quick fix, or maybe fix at all!

Its been a very wet early spring and summer here at this end of Erie (Buffalo). The water has been brown and the level is the highest I've seen in years. The weather has been kinda crappy all summer too. But we have had pretty good wind here. Even though it's August the past 4 days have been epic. So bring on the crappy weather!

I was in Buffalo for work last week, and visited the Navy Park after we finished early on Wednesday 8/13. It was definitely windy; I figured I woulda been on my 4.8. Hot, dry, and windless in Kansas City though.....typical for August.
