I know it's hard to admit, but there are weeds in The Gorge.
Ok, it's not an issue when it's blowing 30 knots. But weeds can be annoying on those moderate days.
Of course, we can jump over them. Should one get stuck? No problem, just throw a loop. But some less talented sailors like me actually have to get off their board and remove the stupid filaments.
One could use a weed fin, but this is something I would not recommend in The Gorge. You should see the commotion in the Cove at The Hatchery every time I put my True Ames weed fin on my 100L board. Invariably, somebody screams "Look, a weed fin!" and then, everybody stares at me in disbelieve, like if I was walking nude on the beach. Quite a walk of shame, I tell you.
Learning to live with weeds? Not necessarily. There is an alternative: putting on a weed fin that doesn't look like a weed fin. Makani fins makes one that fills the bill.
As far as I can tell, the MANO weed fin performs as good as a wave fin, weeds don't like sticking to it and, more importantly, I haven't heard a scream on the beach so far.
Available online or at Gorge Surf Shop

Just tried with my product placement to get a free T-Shirt from Makani Fins.
Didn't work.

Hmm, I have several Makani T-shirts and seldom wear them. If it is that important to you, let me know and you can have one of mine But they are used....... |

Quite a lot, hey?
But the sailing was great: one board (85L) , one sail (4.7). Rare in The Gorge. |

Tyson Poor and I use the Makani Walu 2 Weed fins for our Multi fin setups here in the Gorge and in San Carlos. They work great with no cost to performance.
We also used the Weed Koi freestyle fins in Hatteras a lot and even when at spots where there are no weeds, we kept using them.
Don't fear the weed fin! |

Where's a moderator when you need one. You spoiled brats don't know what weeds are. Come to Bellingham and take a hit of our eel grass. Brutal. |
