Hey Kanaha Sailors, buoys surrounding the Lowers swimming area have drifted off and are now non existent. The swim zone is still a swim zone! Plenty of LOCAL sailors have been sailing out of this restricted area = NOT COOL! The tourists may not know - Locals need to lead by example. Swimmers and kids need and have the right to a safe place to swim and play.

Hopefully, the local Windsurfing Association and the surf shops will help get the line and bouys back up soon ! (?)

It is not legal to sail, launch, or bring rigs into this area. It is strictly prohibited by the DLNR. Sailors need to respect, help enforce, and encourage repair of the line etc. or the DNLR could close the launch.

This week there was a new (to me) area marked by green buoys in front of the lifeguard station downwind of the old swim area. It looked intentional. Are you sure the buoys weren't moved? Or is this just added swim area as part of the recent renegotiation?

If you look out at the old swim zone you'll see the bouys that are supposed to mark it came loose and are resting on the shore at the east (upwind) area of the swim zone. This is still a legal swim zone and needs to be respected, as the author of this thread writes. If you see anyone windsurfing in this swim area, please talk to them nicely and inform them to stay out of it.

I too noted the buoys in front of the lifeguard tower. There were windsurfers adjusting rigs on the beach directly east of these buoys, so the lifeguards weren't restricting the entire area.

I don't know if they are to mark another swim zone (this area was where a man complained that kiters were coming too close to his children. (see http://mauinow.com/2013/05/03/letter-kite-surfers-endanger-kids-at-kaa-point/) Earlier this year his complaints led the DLNR to consider enforcing decades old legal swim zones, closing large beach areas that are currently used for windsurfing. Fortunately the government made the right move and put off this change. (see http://kanahawatch.wordpress.com/ if you want more info on this.

It is also possible that these buoys just mark the area the lifeguards use for their jet ski.

Anyone who has more info on this please let us know. It is extremely important that we windsurfers follow and respect the rules if we are to maintain beach and water access.
