This doesn't make you feel terrible.... in fact, it makes you feel so good and so powerful that you keep doing it again and again and again. You just need to understand the limits. If you go beyond the limits, you better have a backup plan. Everyone who sails in these conditions has to have a backup plan.
Fact is, there has not been a Gorge windsurfing death in the colder months (October - April) attributed to hypothermia.... never. However, there has been windsurfing deaths attributed to hypothermia in the "warmer" months (May - September). Why? Maybe because people tend to be more careful in the colder months... that's my theory. We all have a backup plan.

12-14-2014, fun sunny day, water is still OK as there is no snow run off yet.
Five sailors out and a few spectators on the beach. Larry was on his 4.5 and
I was on my 2.7 as usual

It really was not that cold, and the wind was not that bad. I actually over-heated walking my gear back. The new wetsuits and hoods are warm. I did need gloves. There were some super gusts after we got off the water.

I think there is a little more to it than that. Such as the topography of the river. Easterlies around Stevenson produce swell out in the channel (with less wind). Granted not like the swell a west wind produces, but swell none the less. Rooster from what I've seen still stays pretty flat.
As to why, I don't understand it either. I have NO problem with hanging up my sails and boards and doing something warmer in the winter. Like kayaking.  I just don't understand this singular addiction to a single sport. Live a little, try other things....

Well, we were mountain biking in Moab 2 weeks ago with the kids
(and grand kids), and the misses and I are starting to think deep freshies
in the Cottonwood Canyons (think Snowbird and Solitude).
So I guess we've been taking your advise.

Probably won't stop me from windsurfing on Oahu this Spring though.

Trudy is a good hiker, I've seen her great pics... so, she does diversify to land activities. I met another windsurfer up on the trail just the other day. I do understand the trend to gravitate to river routine. Winter gorge nuke sailing is simply a workout... a tradition, like a daily jog around the neighborhood. However, it's a beautiful, scenic workout at RR. The attraction to this activity at this particular place at this time of year is perfectly understandable to me, especially considering our lack of white stuff on the hills.

Thanks WMP I am also a terrible surfer, however this forum is for windsurfing so I only post windsurfing related pictures. I only get out sailing this time of year 2-3 times a month. I am also a really, really slow runner, really a jogger.
Funny Larry and I were talking about this forum and people seem to think we are way more hardcore then we actually are. It was warm on 12-14-14 and since there is no snow yet, the water is still ok, we were standing around in it resting between our runs.

| I can understand Larry having NO problem with the cold wind (with the "extra insulation" thanks to his extra large body), but I am always blown away at the site of someone like you or Laura Green (lean and mean) doing those really cold, wicked days when nobody else is out there. Reminds me of the movie "Wild".

Here ya go WMP, shot yesterday 1'C air and 5'C water. One of my sailing buddies shot this. There was 8 of us nuts out there. First part was shot a week ago post snow storm.
I wish I had that guy's resistance to cold. The first part of my session yesterday was miserable fighting cold, forearm fatigue, tweaking gear, but once set up it was fun.....and you know how much I suck compared to Gorge sailors.
