We sailed Lake Mead one night in desperation on a week long trip, with no
Moon. Under those circumstances, you need a lighted point of reference
to return to your vehicle. We used the vehicle headlights, which are
discernable out to about 3/4 of a mile. Full moon in the Gorge is great
going one direction, but really hard to see the water state the other
direction. Just a reflection thing. Lighting your way forward will be
counterproductive. You'll want as much light as you can get from the
Moon and no other source. We weren't nearly as prepared as you,
but there was no 5 Mile out venturing either. That sounds like the risky part.

Sailed well past dusk once at the Canadian Hole in Hatteras as a cold front pulled through late one afternoon. Real neat experience especially after the sun set and the water surface reflected the glowing red sky. Sailers in the lot turned their headlights on so you could easily find your way to the launch. Definetly worth a try if you have a few others on the water with you.
