Last night, I had the occasion to drive Hwy 14 east from Vancouver. It was a beautiful starlit night with about 3/4 Moon and EXTREMELY bright Jupiter nearby to the left. By the time I got to Cape Horn (10pm), the wind was howling about 40mph. I had to stop at the Cape Horn pullout to see and feel it all. I was rewarded by a moonlit water and low cloud scene with large ripples/swells, an eerie haze of fog on the east end of the river, and fog/clouds being ripped apart to the east and also mere YARDS right in front of me, blowing over Cape Horn. It was quite thrilling and SPECTACULAR, and I had to hold onto my hat and eyeglasses to keep them from blowing away when I stepped close to the guard rail.

Tonight, there should be more of the same as it appears the cold wet air still resides east of the Cascades while clear skies remain in the Willamette Valley. Mercury and Venus will be <1 degree apart near sundown. Maybe you will see comet Lovejoy as well; bring binoculars and winter parka.

It could be an ideal night for installing your futon in the back of your minivan and grabbing some Viagra (and Viacreme?) for a truly rockin' make-out session you will never forget...at Cape HORN! Under comet LOVEJOY! The closer you park next to the guard rail, the better.

(tee hee!)

She rolled her eyes, but I talked my foxy redheaded girlfriend into the trip to Cape Horn. We arrived before dusk, and the cloud setup was nearly identical to Wednesday's. Venus and Mercury were SPECTACULAR, nearly conjoined. The moonshine on the water was brilliant, illuminating the perfectly-formed swells on the river. And elsewhere. We couldn't take too much of the wind-buffeting outside, so we retreated into my minivan and installed all the privacy shields for the windows. A couple candles were all that were needed for adequate warmth. Music played, wine flowed, snuggling commenced. Foxy girlfriend's eyes rolled again, involuntarily this time. No need for Viagra; they don't call me "Biff Malibu" for nothing.

While we were enjoying the playful buffeting of the wind, we heard several cars pull up, doors opened and closed, and soon creaky suspension sounds carried through the wind like a chorus of 100 ghetto cruisers in an East LA swap meet. We frolicked until they had all left, about 4am, and then returned home at dawn, famished and ready for a quick breakfast of home-baked chocolate chip cookies and whole milk. Yum!

There are now some fresh dents in that guard rail of Cape Horn. And my van needs a paint job. Ahhhh...life is good. Who else got the Cape Horn session Thursday night?

Glad your equipment is still operational. Dude, I did the Cape Horn loop on the previous Friday when there was no wind but plenty of flying chunks of ice coming down that cliff (hard hats or helmets recommended). One ice chunk was about the size of your van.

With all those minivans banging against the guard rail, we began to to achieve resonant frequency in the key of high C at about about midnight and sustained it for about 2 minutes. Consequently, dozens of remaining large chunks of ice came crashing down around us. It was a truly exciting and memorable night.

Come on. Out with it! Who else was there? Nut/ovary-up! I want to hear more session reports!
