I was lucky. After 15 summers of visiting Hood River I had no doubt where I wanted to retire. But with a soft real estate market (2008) and a retirement salary it was easier for me. My wife still works but at a fraction of her California salary. But we love it here. Winters suck but I love the locals. I strongly suggest embracing a backup hobby for those no wind days. Mt biking, whitewater, and hiking just to name a few all rock out here.

Yes, Hood River is ideal but you may have to open up your search. I am sure you can find something between Portland and the Dalles on the OR side and between Vancouver and Bingen on the WA side. |
