|
|
Rule one; Never leave wind to find wind.
Rule two; never wait for wind when you have wind.
Rule three; Rig for what it is, not what you think it will be.
New Rule (Credit one of the Washoe sailors-a female); Never windsurf when the temperature is lower than your age! Fun way to say it. Now this is more relevant where it's cold like Nevada Or New Mexico (ISO and I learned there) but the point is well taken. I've always said we do this for fun and why windsurf when the misery index is higher than the reward? E.g.; Cold water (below 50 degrees), cloudy and cold and up and down crappy winds, should I go knowing it won't be fun? At some point the answer is no.
In this vein, there is a place in Canada on Lake Ontario between Montreal and Toronto called Sandbanks. It goes off when it's cold typically but oh the reward is great. Unbelievable for inland sailing, check it out, real waves on 3.7's; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF4igzd_Y9U |

New rule: has too many holes . Temp here is low 50s, using this no one I know would be sailing. Common sense prevails, drive 30 hours to get here, OBX
And 83liter w/ 5.2m, I can alway get warm later _________________ K4 fins

Your new rule is rejected. A lot of the best sessions are when temperatures are just above freezing - example: https://vimeo.com/85107182
Staying warm is just a matter of dressing appropriately. Ski session are on frozen water, and usually when it's way colder. You're not telling anyone over 25 or 30 to stop skiing, are you? Keeping the body, feet, and head warm is pretty easy. Hands have traditionally been the issue, but that problem has been solved. |

If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun. |

I seem to be running into resistance on rule 4. Perhaps there should be an equation for partaking that takes into account misery (Core temp drop, mumbling slurred speech and not stopping shaking until you get home into the shower, hands on fire etc,) vs how fun (or epic!) it is. Look at it this way; it's 90 degrees out, the water is bathing suit warm and you haven't sailed in a week, but the wind absolutely sucks! You can bet I'm going out!
As far as skiing goes it's a different cold, but I still remember the downhill suit and going up the lift and being a mumbling idiot at the starting line. Oh Yeah.
Finally WindSufa shows Montreal as location, any comments about Sandbanks? |

I have no problem with rule #4. I don't ski because I have an allergic reaction to snow.

Ges, I am from Montréal ...
comments on sandbanks ??
Guideline #2 - do not go out in conditions beyond your skills
The video I viewed showed conditions beyond my skills
I do not own , or I should say, do not use less than a 6.3
for me that's about 40-60 kph winds
However, I have hear nothing but GOOD about sandbanks
Montrealers all drool over sandbanks
Windsurfers and beach lovers.
Which seems to mean - book place WAY in advance if you wanna stay !!
Before I venture out to Sandbanks, I still need to venture out to Lac Champlain - only been there twice...
In 2 weeks first trip to Hatteras
since so many people say "huh" when i say Hatteras,
i started calling it HateHerAss |

I adapted that rule by my second year or so in the sport. Pissed off some friends, and later my boss, but it has really freed up my life. My doctor and dentist see right through my postponements, but since I set them up for early AM on non-Mondays, I can almost always give them a couple days' notice or just get to the beach an hour later. Surgery is a little tougher; given the option they get put off until the winter. Virtually everything else can freaking wait. |
