I have to admit I haven't paid much attention to the coal train dust issue. However, enroute to Doug's I was wondering what the hell was that dark cloud blowing off the train.....Coal Dust. How is that permitted, it will introduce literally tons of that foreign crap into the river and air? How expensive could it be to cover those fuking cars. Now I appreciate the issue. Take action.

Those trains move full speed around Wind Mountain spilling their loads along the tracks. Nobody seems to care. Seems more important to punish the people who try to access public lands and public waters. What has happened here?

Its only going to get worse as the demand for coal in the US decreases with coal power plants either converting to natural gas or shutting down due to new EPA regulations. As a result the more and more of the supply will ship to China via west coast ports. The Port of Vancouver has been spending big bucks upgrading its facilities to ship more oil and coal vis-a-vie Gorge rail deliveries. Its concerning for all of us who use the river for recreation. And Hanford - well that's another concerning story...

For those of you who are concerned enough to educate yourself about new port expansion proposals that will result in more coal and oil shipments by rail in the Gorge here are some links:

http://www.cityofvancouver.us/cmo/page/hot-topic-oil-and-coal-project-proposals

http://www.efsec.wa.gov/default.shtm

http://www.ecy.wa.gov/geographic/millennium/

Make your voice heard during the pubic comment period for these proposals.

Some staggering stats:

Oil

The proposed Tesoro oil terminal at Port of Vancouver if approved will result in 8 new trains a day, each train 1.5 miles long. The impacts would be devastating for windsurfers. Just think about how this will impact Dougs.

Coal

The proposed Millennium coal terminal at the Longview port will result in 19 new trains a day, each 1.5 miles long.

If both projects are approved we will see 27 or more new trains a day.

Ok time for all of us to let our voices be heard.

With each passing day, Hanford gets a bit cleaner and the coal dust problem gets worse. I suspect that if that video's dust cloud is real, people will solve that problem by the courts or by more direct means if necessary.

The Perfect Storm train wreck... could easily happen at that siding near Doug's....I live nearby and often pass that when there's a coal train sidetracked and an Oil train passing it a foot or two away at speed. We all know many of the grass fires are caused by train sparks...

It'd really be some disaster if 100+ Oil tanker cars combined and combusted with 100+ coal cars...Right here in the National Scenic area on the west coast's mainstreet river for migrating fish....

I must say it is rare when I can actually exit the Lyle tunnel going east and even see the river...there is almost always a coal train, an oil train, or a trash train parked on that siding..24hrs a day...Some Scenic Area....
