I gotta ask: Did you switch your feet before the sail flip, or after? |

Almost all of them. Foot placement is the exception, it needs to be more precise on narrower and lower volume boards. I stayed on big boards too long, and still pay for it by getting thrown off when I put my feet at the wrong spots on a small board. That's years after planing out of jibes on big gear regularly. Same thing for jibes and tacks. Maybe I'm a slow learner. But as Beth Winkler said - Jibing as a career!
So, ones you got a few more planing jibes on the big gear, try them on smaller gear, too. How flat the water is makes a huge difference, though. |

Foot switch then sail flip. I don't know anything about the other way and never intentionally tried it (may have accidentally tried and failed - having failed in countless ways).

Congratulations! First planing jibe is a huge accomplishment, as are the next 1000!
Regarding the foot switch, all other things being equal switching the feet first is usually the best practice with bigger gear . Once your sail sizes start beginning with a 5 you can think about sail flip first. That's just a general guideline. Whenever in doubt switch your feet first, as it helps you control the nose to tail board trim to keep you planing. _________________ Michael

I agree with PP. Foot switch first on larger sails (less wind and less chop/swell). On smaller sails I tend to flip then switch or both at same time. I will admit that my arcs are smoother with a foot first approach. 5.0 to 4.5 seems to be the changing point for me also.
5 years ago (before moving to the gorge) I did feet first on all jibes. Something changed since moving here...... |

Way to go. As encouragement. I just started last summer at 50. I'm fully addicted, on day 71 now this year, have been making fast carving jibes for only two weeks now. It's so fun! And so much better than re-srarting each tack/run. I've done it with no lessons, and only on 15-20yr old used CL equip....So cheap!! |
