I'm gonna say it's so much dependent upon the conditions. I was down at Anini last week and it was blowing maybe 10-12 knots, not enough to windsurf without a 9 or 10M sail and a giant fin. There was one guy on a kite in the gentle side shore trade winds. It seemed to me perfectly safe and he wasn't bothering anyone as there were few swimmers and no windsurfers. But then a few days later I was down there and it was 12-16 knots on my wind meter, there were a few kites and a lot of swimmers for some reason. A kiter came in and crashed his kite as he was getting out of the water, the kite came rather close to a swimmer and I thought well that's not too cool. I can only imagine a crowded beach, on shore stronger gusty winds...

Lots of rants on the blog, I just found out about this tragic incident a month later. Was kiting at OB that afternoon but at Kelly's far away from where this happened. It was windy and mainly GUSTY that afternoon.

So...does anybody know if he is ok?? Still recovering?? His name?

Any more details about the exact cause? Most accounts say he was at the shore or near it. Self launching? Any other kiters around at the time? Maybe a faulty de-power system or pre-depower?? The photos indicate old gear.

Would like to know if he is ok a month later or at least on some road to recovery!! Tragic.

Just saw another poster saying he passed away. Sorry to hear that and condolences to the family and loved ones. This one strikes close to home for many of us.
