I am looking for some ideas about protecting the grip under my harness lines. The material is extremely rough, particularly when the gear is dry. I am using a single Dakine line set up and notice that Dakine has sewn a 1 1/2" square piece of some softer material, so someone was thinking about the issue. My ideas so fae are moleskin or bike tubing probably attached with a ballsy epoxy. Anyone have any ideas ON TOPIC? |

Has anyone tried
http://www.clipharnessline.com/
?
I am curious. My harness lines tear all the grip off my booms, plus cinch up and are nearly impossible to move on the fly. |

The Clips lines work well when hooked in, but tend to rotate out of position after a reach or three under load. Mounted one way, they rotate just far enough away from me that I have to make a conscious effort -- sometimes even a big effort -- to hook in. So I got smart and mounted them the other way, thinking they would rotate a little bit towards me and be RIGHT THERE when I want to hook in. Not so much. After the next reach they stuck almost straight up in the air.
Brought back memories from my teens.
I phoned the Clip guys, and they assured me that was not a common issue and promised to solve the problem. They suggested watching me mount the lines via live cell phone video link. Sounds good, but a) I'm rigging it according to their very detailed videos and b) my season had already ended, so I couldn't try any new idea on the water. It will call 'em back in April and try them again. However, see (a) above.
One reason I hope it's fixable is that I sold a too-long-for-me pair of Clips last summer, before I recognized that problem. I honestly told the buyer that I had no complaints about their shorter model. Now I do.

I'd use a 3"or 4" section of bike tubing sized tight to your boom. Take off your boom tailpiece and slide it over your boom (with soapy water as a lube) to the worn spot.
I'd stay away from epoxy on the line pad. It dries hard and won't flex. Contact cement would be better.
Plasti dip dabbed into nicks in the boom grip is a good quick fix. I use it on the front curve to protect the carbon from rigging scuffs. My worst boom wear comes from rigging on the rough ground.
I'm happy to show anyone repair tips in person just ask. See you out there in a couple months. |

Thanks Jim. The continuous piece sounds like a good idea. See you in March. |

Haven't had that problem. I like Clips because of the spreader at the bottom, and because they have just a tiny bit of give which feels better on my back. Probably most can't feel the difference but my back does. The key to putting them on the boom is to warm them up. Dash board works great. |
