March thru May are the most reliable months for seabreeze. If it's a cool spring ,good seabreeze can persists into June, but once the water warms, you often have to dodge thunderstorms to score good sessions, but if you have time and don't mind driving, you can score Slalom planing conditions often enough through the summer.

I just moved to Melbourne 4 weeks ago, so I still need to learn all the local launches. This thread is very helpful.

I've got to say, I'm excited to live in the same town as a world class sailor like Josh.

Welcome to Melbourne,

There is a small Brevard county park about 1 mile north of the boat ramp next to Pineda causeway. The boat ramp doesn't work very well on a SE seabreeze. March gets a very consistent SE sea breeze in the late afternoon. Most of the locals go to Kelly Park. I am more of an ocean sailor and sail at Picnic Tables or 2nd light at Patrick AFB.

chris, that launch off US 1 is maybe 100 yards north of pineda.

then one drives back south within the park to gain water access. only a couple of wrecks to watch out for. small craft abandoned during economic collapse.

i remember getting some decent seabreezes at the river side of banana river resort, yet walking to the beach house, and wondering what happened to the wind in the surf.... crazy cocoa beach seabreeze. we've had that discussion many times b4. it just does not attach in the surf until really late, most times.... it can be blowing in the rivers, but not so much in the ocean.

seabreezes attach better in the ocean above the cape and south of melbourne. dunno why, they just do.

All of the sailing venues in the banana and Indian River have higher winds on a seabreeze, at least in the afternoons when I sail. I remember one particularly robust seabreeze, I measured wind speed average of 12 mph at the beach, drove a mile or so on the Eau Gallie causeway to the sailing site there, wind was measuring 24 mph.

Hi Josh,
Chuck in Maui here, I used to watch you testing with my friend Pieter Biel in Maui in the past few years. I lived in Melbourne from 1993 to 2002, and Rockledge 2002-2007.
With your equipment you will have many days sailing there, I used to sail 7.8 and 9.0 with 76cm board on typical seabreeze days (12-16).
Lighter wind days 9.9 and same board or next board size up on windspeed 8- 12.
You will get a lot of days SE and East, with ocean temps in low 70s and inland Orlando Temps in 90 F. Used to work early and seabreeze kicked in at 3pm and lasted to 5 or 6pm. Seabreeze season was normally Mar to June, and will continue into summer but watch for Lightning after June,
or Lightning storms that migrate east late in the day from Orlando. But many more months available to sail on South and SW prefrontal in Sept and postfrontal NW and North on thru Winter.
I've put together some specific launch site info and will attach it here.
Not too much right around Pineda, but that attached sites are good and not a long drive, just one or two causeways North or South.
You will have to look hard to find a sparring partner that will equal Pieter,
but there are some good sailors there, just not too many. Best chance will be Tinho at Kelly Park ,and Ingerbristesn, if he still sails slalom.
Also Good wavespots also at Jetty park, Patrick AFB, Sebastian Inlet,
and Ft Pierce Inlet.

Hi Josh and everyone else in and around Florida!

Just in case you're not currently receiving the US Windsurfing newsletter, here's the latest edition: http://bit.ly/1OcybK3.

It includes links to upcoming events in Florida and up the coast in the next few months. A little driving is required but many (Cocoa Beach, Clearwater, Sarasota, Miami) are very accessible from Melbourne!

It would be nice to see you guys at those events to share the stoke with newcomers and old-timers Smile

Cheers,

Jerome.
