On my way to the boat ramp I met a marine mammal just inside the fence on the boat ramp.
Just sitting there with no visible wounds, about 75 lbs I’d say. I called the marine mammal center and they ID’d him as a juvenile elephant seal, and said that the young ones often get confused and climb up onto beaches to explore. He said to avoid him and that the pup would return to the water.
When I mentioned the smears of pink paint on his back, he said “oh, we know that guy. That is our marker that he has been seen before. He’s appeared on several beaches”.
I proceeded to rig on the ramp with him eyeing me and on occasion putting out a little bleat. His eyes were the size of 50-cent pieces.
Wind dropped as soon as I got in the water. No sailing. Access needs lots of work to be functional this season, as in having the gate opened again on weekends and the fence left open.
