The only material holding your mast base onto your board is pure resin, epoxy for sure, onto a plastic fin/mast box, about 1/16" thick.
I"ve seen over 3 pulled out of epoxy boards in the past, and more in the older poly boards. A cause of leakage, probably 5 more that didn't pull out, but leaked and needed mast box replacement.

I agree with the crazy part, but I do enjoy the adrenaline boost from sailing in spooky places and conditions. HOWEVER, "spooky" and "life-threatening" are quite a ways apart in my book. A long barefooted walk or even a night spent in a remote spot ON LAND is one thing; This is another altogether:
I don't care whether it's 40 feet or 40 cm long, or whether it's an aquarium fish or Baja-Dean ... want nuthin' to do with it.

We should make a post about "scariest" spots to windsurf.
I haven't done it, but how about Ray Dieter and Matt Ghurash sailing out between North Farallone and South Farallone, to have Ray's mast break on the way back, around 13 miles out to sea.

No guarantees in this sport. All we can do is limit the variables over which we have control.
I like the double bolt. I've had too many times where the single bolt just slipped out of the mast track (user error on my part as I didn't tighten well enough).
Otherwise, always assume something can break, fin's snap off, masts shatter just because and booms break all the time. Always windsurf with company and if you don't, never sail where you can't swim back safely.

that would be super helpful
thanks! |

This is the universal that needs attention. It has a circular steel disk on the underside and an oval steel plate on top.
Unis with black plastic on the underside are fine.
The new 2016 design has a oval disk on top and black plastic on the underside.
