Hi,
Is there any reason not to get a 5 year old used sail that is in excellent condition? I"m looking at a 2011 Sailworks Revolution 4.6. I have a much older Revo 4.6 (1995-ish) and want to get a sail that has more range and modern design. Would 2011 cut it, or has something relatively significant happened in sail design in the past 5 years that should make me keep looking for something newer.
thanks |

Absolutely.
You can't be seen with an old out of date sail. Everyone would think you're a beginner, and the newer sails just work soooooo much better. Forget the notion, buy new.
OTOH, one of my best 6.0's is a 1995 Gaastra 3 cambered narrow sleeved slalom sail.
My best 5.5 is a 1997 North Spectro.
My best 5.0 is a 1996 Windwing Interface Wave.
My best 4.5 is a 2007 Hot SuperFreak.
My best 4.2 is a 1998 North Voodoo.
Rules that apply to me don't necessarily apply to you, of course |

No significant changes in 5 year old sails.
I would caution you to beware of sails that look good but may have sat out in the sun for extended periods. UV damage is what kills sails. Look at the color of the fabric under the mast sleeve and compare to the fabric around the body of the sail. If the fabric around the body is significantly lighter (faded), then walk away.

New is not always better. These days the price of brand new sails is way to high. Just be sure in inspect that 5 year old sail for wear. Not only the obvious but sun damage. |
