|

Hi Gang,
New posting at the bottom of this thread about the Sunday forecast.
Yep is has been a crazy spring for both Southern California and the Bay Area.
Well it gets crazier this weekend. Southern California is frequently plagued by morning eddies that delay and weaken the coast winds but today the Catalina Eddy spins ALL DAY creating SSE weak coast .
And tomorrow the Bay Area a Golden Gate Eddy, which also normally dies mid day, spins ALL DAY spoiling the normal wind pattern south the Bay Bridge but making the E. and N. bay rip.
What is causing these ALL DAY eddies? Upper level winds!.
Take a look at the animation below for Southern California and you can clearly see what is happening.
Something similar happens for the Bay Area tomorrow but you can get a hint of it even in today's imagery.
I will have text and Bay Area animations tomorrow in this blog:

Hi Gang,
If you saw the Sunday morning 7AM forecast you probably sensed I was waffling about today's all day Golden Gate Eddy.
You may have also noticed that I had backed down from my earlier low to mid 20's forecast for the N. & E Bay to upper teens to low 20's.
The reason for this back pedaling is clear in the video below which starts at the surface and goes up to 1500 meters above the Bay. As you can see we have southerly eddy winds at the surface and up to 1000 ft. above the surface. But above that we have Northerly winds.
Having winds move at opposite direction could at least weaken the surface southerly winds. And I was worried at 7AM that those northerly winds could kill the eddy winds.
After taking the medication empiricism my worries went away! At this time it looks like the N. wind aloft will only weaken the PM Sherman Island winds. Rest of the bay should play out as forecast.
