How to tie the overhand loop knot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xihKhSU245U

(Note how there is no free-play possible; the knot is "well-dressed" or ''orderly", meaning the knot is as compact as it can be. There is no crossover or twisting of the parallel ropes. This is good ropecraft.)

How NOT to tie the overhand loop knot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4edX0NuJ1Q

(Note how there is quite lackadaisical twisting/crossover of the ropes at about 0:41 AND a relatively short "tail". This knot has much greater potential for loosening and failure. Don't believe everything you see and hear on the internet.)

It's a simple knot, but it still must be done well (not lackadaisically) for maximum security. Tie it orderly and tightly. New line can be very stiff. So pull it tight and leave some tail, if possible. Tail is a good thing. Wink
