I posted this unsuccesfully to rec.windsurfing (no responses). Hopefully someone here can help Smile

For the non-planing pivot jibe, I was taught that it didnt really matter if you
1) moved your back foot further backwards towards the rear of the board
or
2) took your old front foot and moved that to the rear,
in order to sink the tail.

Is there a better way here or is it personal preference?

I find that the moment I move the back foot further to the back of the
board all the weight goes on the front front (which is forwards on the
windward edge) and it makes the board temporarily unstable. Then when
I bring that back foot forwards again to become the new front foot, I
have a similar problem. I have seen it done this way on video though.

However with 2), when I lift the front foot to move behind the back
foot (which is already on the centerline) everything lines up nicely
since I can put this old front foot straight across the centerline at
the back of the board. Then the feet are in the right position for
once I am through the turn. The only problem is that I am standing
kind of strange, duck style with both feet over the centerline and it
doesnt feel so stable.....

One day, Ill be asking questions on carving jibes, but at least I have
progessed from the flare jibe with center board down Smile

One last question, is a slam-jibe and a non-planing pivot-jibe the same
thing?

thanks again Smile

ciao

Gosh, so many terms to use! I always called the pivot a snap, or a snake jibe. snake for snaking the wave from someone.
To answer your Q, What ever feels good is good.
For me, I like to move my rear foot (as to make any one of the many jibes) to the rear as normal. on snap jibes I just move it further back.
As I Prepair to exicute the snap, I start upwind alittle to depower the sail and move my back foot behind (about) the back strap, then I move the front foot back near the back foot and pull on the boom and push hard with foot preasure While leaning the sail windward alittle and sheeting out more and more as the the board snaps around. Dont worry too much about your feet as long as your comfirtable. At the end of the snap, I am moving My old back foot forward and sailing away clue first. I flip the sail just after I regained my balance and better footing. It happens very quick, and there is no time to think during the snap so just snap.

Happy sailing.......

Ps. dont forget to move your boom back hand a little further back on the boom when you start, It helps for control.

also, If I confused you at all, dont be discuraged, I just dont have good writing (or spelling) skills.

thanks Sylvain,

My board is a short, fat board - the Techno 283, with 151 liters of volume (no daggerboard). I weigh about 160 lbs and use a 5.5 and 6.5 Sailworks Retro sail in about 15 mph winds.

hope this would help you,

best wishes

peter
