Yes ... but even more important ... it's more accurate. Unless backed up by a carefully calibrated ambient wind speed sensor within a few feet of one's sail, these "light wind" estimates are simply guesses.

Yes, very funny.

Now, seriously: how about 0:28 AM local time?

For those interested in accurate data: that was Sunday, April 15 2012, in Avon, NC. Went on to sail 270 km that day. 8.5 m sail, Exocet Warp 71 (117 l), local iWindsurf meter showed averages of 15 mph. With more light, I can plane on this gear in a mile or two less wind. Rarely use the 8.5 anymore now, longboards with smaller sails are more fun in 10-15. Light wind freestyle with even smaller sails is also more fun in 3-15 mph.

when the windfest used to be at kalmus i watched 100kg dunkerbeck yank an old school(long and narrow) slalom board of about 100l(and 9 lbs.) onto a plane in no more than 12mph with a 7.8. sailed out to the jetty and back and declared
that there was not enough wind to sail.

Paul, that reminds me when at the windfest, maybe the same one, I saw Josh Stone , jump over the middle little jetty, when it was there. It was only blowing about 15 mph , he bet some other pro, supper,he could do it. He not only did it, but turned the board around , in mid air and landed backward. Quite amazing !

With someone of his ability and talent this is within the bounds of reasonable light wind planing.
The 9 lb board is very light .

For whatever reason this light wind debate is a subject on a lot of threads
Some of the responses are hilarious

What's really interesting to me, is that according to the title of this thread, it is about "planning", not "planing".

So, the earliest I have planned to plane is during at least a week or more of non-planing winds.
