I went all skinny for other reasons:
1. My sails are designed/optimized for Skinnys.
2. Skinnys have much thicker, stronger walls. I'm tired of long swims.
3. Skinnys rig more easily.
4. My sail designer says membrane (as opposed to double luff) sail aerodynamics are so disturbed anyway that leading edge thickness isn't going to cost ordinary WSers any speed. |

Yes I did notice the double pads, the upper would contact , the lower I think not. And for me I can't grip the under boom area to tack, good reason to go boom to boom.
At one time in the not too distant past the windsurfing speed record was done on a RDM, from a aerodynamic standpoint they are more efficient, but how much...for a regular guy who's out to have fun.
This doesn't come up very often but a skinny should cause more damage than a SDM, standard mast...its pointier..if that's the correct term for something that's round.
Along with they sink faster, those are the negatives towards its use. Strength and performance increase in some conditions offset mostly those, except getting hit in the head with the pointy one..good cast to wear a helmet.

I use the same pad , at times, if positioned directly under the boom it interferes with tacks, unless you'd hands are huge. Even slightly lower it does provide some usefulness. |
On page 2 , I wrote this, in reference to the post above which includes a photo.
I used my ion pad today, it would not attach using the Velcro , so the clamps only, it slid down , similar to where the ion is in the photo.
I WAS WRONG, it still buffers the mast from the nose, depending on the board itself it could be better there.
My bad, sorry.
