Marine officials in Oregon are asking lawmakers to consider imposing fees on people who use kayaks, rafts and other non-motorized watercraft on the state's public waterways Under the proposed legislation, a one-week permit for non-motorized boating would cost $4, an annual permit would cost $12 and a two-year permit would cost $20.

In Iowa watercraft powered by a sail or motor and any watercraft at least 13 feet in length must be registered and pay a fee. In April 2016 the fee for one windsurfer covering the 3yr period through April 30, 2019 was $27.40. Boats are required to have registration numbers of a certain size and a current decal on their sides. Windsurfers only need to display a current decal under the bow which is visible while underway. The fee amounts have changed but the basic fee structure is is probably more than 30 years old.

Visitors from other states who are in IA less than 60 days only need whatever is needed in their home state.

I have two small sailboats & 6 windsurfers. The $219.20 total is noticeable when paid all at once, but it is tiny compared to all of my TOW.

Ridiculous! Another waste of taxpayers money... and for what purpose? Make work for some bureaucrat?

It's also going to drive a lot of business across the river. Who's gonna put up with the expense and incredible hassle of this when they can avoid it by crossing the bridge?

I thought stupid, uneducated moves like this ended with the bans on launching if the gusts exceeded 20 mph, or the equally stupid practice of multiplying your number of boards by your number of sails and multiplying by about $2.50 to determine your entrance fee at Lake Lopez. (Lessee ... 10 X 8 X $2.50 ... that's darned near $200.)
