I'm being cheap and trying to avoid buying a 430 mast.
Will a 441 luff 5.5 retro rig on a 460? Any noticeable effects.
I also have a 8.5 retro 510 luff. For that, think i have no choice but to buy a 490 but could i use an extension on 48cm missing off 2cm of trim? |

Why try to put the wrong stuff together trying to save some money? The sails will perform poorly, and you risk breaking your only mast rigging it on the 8.5. The boom reenforcement in the mast will be in the wrong place.
If you are a heavier than average sailor, you can probably get away rigging the 5.5 on the 460 if it has an adjustable head, but the upper part of the sail won't be able to breathe and depower as naturally as it should.
Regarding the 8.5, you really should buy a 490SDM. To save some money, you can always go with Sailworks' 75% carbon Joystick at $509.00. If you see a lot of light wind sailing, it would be a fine investment long into the future. |

I took a 2 hour swim when 32 cm of new carbon extension snapped on a right masted 8.5...
No way would I trust 48 cm of extension |

this was a new fibersnap .
agreed they vary, but I think that maybe the best place for aluminum is in an extension...we've had some wave issues with carbon extensions
Still 48cm is alot |

Why do they make 48cm extensions then? Is it just to have some spare when say using it as 35cm? |

I have a 48cm aluminum extension, and I am not afraid (I don't have
any carbon extensions and I like carbon, so that should tell you something).
Probably wouldn't rig something like that in surf, but my 48 isn't an
RDM so that isn't happening anyway.
Sometimes it's handy to have a long extension when you snap a mast and
don't have a replacement, you can often use your shorter mast with a long
extension, until you get a new mast.
