my site has an inside and an outside. the outside probably blows 10 more than the inside and is pretty gusty. as a beginner foiler do you rig for the gusts and slog the rest?

how do you ever use the harness lines? it seems my arms are extended way forward to keep from over foiling. overpowered?

Most of the foilers I see at the Event Site/Waterfront Park stay on the inside where the wind is lighter.

Except for Dale - he goes everywhere!

That is the coolest animation I've seen in a year. I was up at the Hatchery
when Dale (and Bruce) foiled by that day.

Want to try foiling? Dale Cook and Colson Zack are offering LP foil demos at Bob's Beach in Stevenson today. Bring your floaty board with a Tuttle box, or ride our 130 liter yellow pug.

Just like windsurfing, you choose your sail according to where you want to sail and what the wind is there, for your weight, board, style, and skill.
If you rig for the outside, you have to slog a bit to get there.
If you rig for the inside, expect to be overpowered when you're outside.
When you're foiling, you're planing on the foil, so there is less load on the booms, so you don't need to hook in urgently. You can sail 1.5 mile reach's without hooking in, as you're standing up and feathering the sail once up on a foil.

This feathering is going to pull my shoulders out. Sail selection for a newb is a coin flip. After 6 sessions I can't look at the water and make an educated guess. Is there a generic rule of thumb (say a meter less) or something. Don't really want to have a rig fest every day.

For foiling, rig a sail 2.0 ~ 2.5 mē smaller than what is being used for powered up planing windsurfing.

All the foiler's around here, using Formula boards, rig the same size sail for foiling as I do for freeride.
Sometimes, when they get competitive in course slalom, they rig a meter bigger than I do, talking same weight sailors.
Guys who weigh 30-40 lbs more than me always rig at least 1.5 meter bigger sails, up to 2.5 meters bigger if they need upwind/downwind course racing ability.

So you understand.
Bruce is a racer, at 200 lbs. He's using a 7.5 race type sail in winds of 15-25 mph.
I'm a freeride sailor, at 160 lbs., and normally use a 5.0 and 85 liter bump n jump board for 15-25 mph winds.
