Iron man Fred was windsurfing at the Stick for about three and half hours this afternoon. Found out that he will turn 80 tomorrow. He is an amazing guy, snow skiing the Sierra mountains from December to April and windsurfing from May to October, and for many years, the first man hit the water and the last man out, truly an inspiration to us local sailors. With Fred as example, I think some of us will continue to buy new equipment, believing many happy sailing years lie ahead.
Happy Birthday, Fred!

Those photos have to be at least 25 years old. I don't know Fred, but wish him well. Fred's only clue he just turned 80 are those "I don't give a fuck" sunglasses in the second photo. Otherwise, I'd swear he was in his middle 50's. Sail on Fred. You are indeed an inspiration.

Fred's picture in my post was taken on 7/30/17, about 6 hours before he turns 80. Most at the Stick know he "has been old" for a while....but Fred will be thrill to hear that he looks 55 .

Fred is indeed an inspiration. I was about to hang it up after this season but now will have to rethink it. Seven more sounds like a lot, but the way time flies...
As I recall, the flat water (most of the time) at the stick was nice to the old leg joints. Might be one of the keys to ws longevity. Is that what draws people to the foil?

I don't think that the flat water is the answer. Fred loves to ski moguls in the winter at Squaw.

Aside from the increase in gravitational force and the increased hardness of various surfaces, 66 still works. Crashing used to be a non-issue.
These days I try to avoid it as much as possible. 80? I'm going for it. Besides, there's not a better narcotic available for pain relief than doing that thing we do!
