|
|
Was trying to learn water starting at the weekend.
I would very the board at right angles to the wind.
Lift the sail from top of the mast and swim towards the board lifting the sail. As I get closer the board would always start to point upwind and then be almost impossible to reorient it.
Am I pulling the sail towards the tail of the board somehow and need to push it forwards?
This is all in the water by the way just as I get close to putting my back foot on the board |

You're getting both of your hands on the boom?? Yes push forward. Stand in the water about beach start depth. Learn to steer your board around then try it when you can't touch bottom??? Or just fly your sail and go grab your board so you can put your foot on. You're rounding up??? |

When you are in the water start position, you must lean the mast way forward to keep the board from rounding up wind... |

Is the arm closest to the mast bent? If so, straighten it out, and lock
your elbow, that would be the 1st step in fixing errors in your waterstart, and it will keep you from rounding up.

I sounds like you are pulling the mast/board towards you as you "swim" down the mast. Even if you have pulled the nose upwind a bit, it just takes some practice maneuvering the board into position (nose about 110 degrees off the wind. |

Try but sailing the board don't try to get up at first .
Notice how if the nose of he board turns downwind to far the
sail will be ripped from your hand if the board turns to far upwind
the sail will depower and fall towards you you. This is all about mast foot
pressure. Buy a copy of Trictionairy
3 for this technique and a endless supply of other tips. |

Here's the drill, go out in waist deep water and practice flying the sail then move the sail so the clew is pointing into the wind and flip the sail around so the mast end is now pointing into the wind, do the same thing going the other direction. Then put your back foot on the board and fly the sail parallel to the water with your body lying in the water and the lift of the sail keeping your head above water. Now practice pushing then pulling on the boom and pushing then pulling with your back foot and notice how it steers the board.
You can actually sail away and steer the board like this lying in the water with one foot on the board. |

There are four ways to steer the board with the rig. Pushing on the mast turns the nose downwind, pulling on the mast turns the nose upwind, pulling down on the clew turns the nose upwind & pulling up on the clew turns the nose downwind.
You have three choices to learn to water start.
1. Take a lesson
2. Have someone video you
3. Try to figure it out on your own
If you choose path #3 then the hardest part is trying to figure out what you are doing wrong because you have no visual feedback. So here are the two most common problems to rounding up in water starting. Good luck.
Kicking the tail of the board downwind. Doesn't sound like that is your problem yet.
Pulling down with the clew hand. Likely culprit.
