Hey Windfind,
I took a look at the USAfishing.com site. That's got some great information.
I was (and still am) an avid East Coast fisherman but after many years out here in CA I've not pursed fishing out west although I keep planning to.
Your site looks like a great place to get me motivated to finally start.
Thanks !!!

Maybe the freestylers can throw their moves at the far side by Highway 101 on starboard tack when the fishermen are at the point..water is actually smoother there.

Candlestick is a place of contrasts ...
For the most part, the wind is consistent. And you can find enough wind to sail in even when the rest of the Bay is shut down. And for an urban sailing site, it's an easy drive from most points on the 101.
When the fog is billowing over the hills of Brisbane, it's an awesome sight. But sometime when they try to mask the stench from recology, you'll find yourself sailing into cloying perfumed air.
And like most public venues, you'll find a mix of people. Mostly I've found the non-windsurfers curious and positive about the sport. If you aggressively head upwind when launching, you are likely to avoid the fishing area (and the razor sharp rocks along the shore if you unfortunately have to do the walk of shame.)
And the park area has quite a history. Then vice-president, Richard Nixon threw the first ball to open the stadium in 1960 and the Beatles' final live concert happened on 29 August 1966 at the stadium.
Enjoy Candlestick while you can. Not sure what will happen to the sailing area when the redevelopment across the park happens in earnest.
Anyone care to conjecture about the name "Candlestick?" Some sources say the name comes from the once prolific Candlestick birds who lived there. Another says the rocks behind the stadium resembled candlesticks.

I'm not a fisherman , or a 'stick windsurfer, but it seems like a Striper caught in the waters of the shores of the 'stick, would not be good eating....

I have been sailing at the Stick for 30 years and I never had a problem other than occasionally having to apologize to fishermen if I drifted too close to their lines.
It is a place that as all places attracts all kinds of people, but the majority are actually families with kids, and fishermen, and lots of people taking a break.
Crissy field is actually arguably more "dangerous", my car got broken in twice there.
And more than the occasional conflict among users of the park what is a disgrace is that our so progressive state is not maintaining it properly (there are no toilets this year!) and is selling parts of it to developers. Enjoy the place while we still have it!
