Hi Gang,

The forum post below talks about the unusual heat wave gripping the west coast. But today I have some imagery about the likely return of our west winds. I am really glad I am not forecasting for the Gorge today because everything I see out the window says a windless day. Take a look below at my smoky calm view of the Hatch at 8:45AM today.

But the upper trough mentioned in the blog link below is moving towards the coast at 18k feet and is rapidly deepening the marine layer west of PDX. So our Gorge forecasters are expecting wind in the 20's this afternoon. The animation below show how the isobars begin to stack up in the corridor mid day.

Blog from Yesterday

Hi Gang,

The Bay Area, The Gorge and Southern California have all had their wind patterns impacted by a huge dome of upper high pressure the last couple of days. This blog details the nature of such a dome and how it creates weak E. winds in the Gorge, highly focused winds near the coast in the Bay Area and strong coast winds for Southern California.

It also explains why the remains of hurricane Harvey are lingering rather than moving on like a regular hurricane.

Lastly it explains why all 3 regions will see a major change in the wind pattern in the next 48 hours.

Now that that pattern has run its course, here's another interpretation:
