Lots of different ways to have fun times on a windsurfer. And this is totally fun, for lots of people.
I was sailing a Bic (Dufour) Wing last Tue, exactly like the one in this vid.
And 3 days before that, I was on my LP windfoil... it's all good _________________ Greg

Couldn't agree more!
Most of us oldies learnt on such gear when enthusiasm and the determination to conquer were at their most consuming. So why shouldn't the young have a bit of fun too, on those light wind days, and feel what it was like on those old wobbly long boards, with big triangular sails which yanked awkwardly in any gust? They may even enjoy the challenge.
Can't help wondering if Bic will ever latch on to the nostalgia market (a strong growing market in other areas) and reintroduce one of their better old longboards along with a sensible rig? I suspect there could be a nice little market for such among our older members. I'd buy one! (A new Bic Beebop in Ace Tec construction please. It was a great shape, with a strong performance -till it fell to pieces in its original delicate construction!!) |

oh yeah ... the BIC Dufour
they made a LOT of them ...
just this year sold the last 2 I had at the chalet
they go for about $60 here
they seemed to be able to turn on a dime
due to the tiny tail ?
the sail and boom sucked and was the first thing i changed
adapted the base to be able to take "newer" sails
before I sold them all - made a video with a modern HSM SpeedFreak 8.5
and added some music
NOT a great board, but always fun up at the lake ...

Dufour, a classic to rival the Windsurfer, depending on location.
Some of my fondest memories of cruising from the launch dock at Lake Merced to the dam at the SE end, and back, using a harness, past the shotgun range, in breeze of 3-8 mph. One long reach there, a few tacks back.
I was too cheap to actually BUY a Dufour, choosing a sub 500 dollar Alto instead. Good enough for learning and checking out Berkeley from the Kitebeach to the docks on a PLANING day....for Derek, Bard, and the locals, not me. |

I started with a Bic 250, added an Alpha 180, then added a Bic Dufour Wing which was a much better light wind board than the 250. The Wing would be tremendously improved with an A-box or better fin box, with a real mast track, with a fully retractable daggerboard & foot straps (in that order). But I think it was the best of the light wind boards which didn't have those things.
The later O'Brien Sensation had the above improvements and was for quite a while the best selling board. Any revived Wing or Sensation would also need to lose about 8-10 lbs. |

My first board is in the video, a HiFly 500 (purchased in 1984), which had an adjustable boom, adjustable mast track and a fully retractable dagger, foot straps galore, but I don't remember if the extension was adjustable. State of the art, but a heavy poly board. I started racing immediately in local races, but quickly found out that the Dufour Wing, Superlight, etc. were faster, so I bought a Superlight in 1985 and I still have it with the original sail, in excellent condition. I borrowed a Dufour wing once to race and slipped and slid all over the place on it's "ice rink" deck.
Racing in the 80's was a kick! |
