I'm finding my Starboard go 161 a bit tippy in light winds 8-15kts.
Could be I'm just not used to it as I've only been put on it a few times but I'm also feeling like I'm digging the front in. My front foot is right next to the mast base like on longer boards. Sounds like I need to be a bit further back but then the straps get in the way.
Remove the straps for now?
When I tack I have the same issue. As I face into the wind and quickly turn around the mast to swap sides, the front digs in, I get all off balance and fall maybe 1 in 3 times. |

8-15 is light winds
board is 161 liters and 250 x 87 cm
and should not be tippy
put more pressure on back foot and front will not go down
can always try moving mast base back a bit
when you tack keep foot near mast and do fast tack
NO chance for front to sink at all ...
think you are about 200 pounds if i remember
s/b fine on this board up to about 20 knots (if flat water) |

Be quick with your feet. As you progress to smaller boards you will need to be on the balance point or center line to keep from sinking or falling in. keep at it. That board will soon feel big |

As soon as you go around the mast you have to step back and stick the rig forward (a lot). Commit your weight into the boom and off you go. I find that lowering yourself also helps to facilitate the exit. (I sail GO too (2011 171L) Another thing that helps a lot is to have your front wrap around the mast as far as possible before starting the tack. That speeds up the trip around the mast. You should wait until the sail is back winded (for a lack of a better term) before jumping around the mast. My 2cents.

15 knots is not light, you need time on the water. A big board like this turns slowly. Work around the straps . Welcome to the learning curve _________________ K4 fins

Yes, remove the straps for now if they are getting in the way.
On your tack it sounds like you may be stepping too far towards the nose. To help with your footwork wrap your front foot around the mast with your toes pointing slightly towards the tail. That will open up space for you when you step forward with your back foot so you can place your back foot right up against the mast base.

If you have the straps in the beginner position then they definitely clutter up the deck where you'd want to put your feet. Also they won't do much to control the size fin that makes a larger Go work well.
I'm not saying to put them full outboard but that the next progression spot should not be in the way. |
