I have a Neil Pryde SDM CK45 (45% Carbon/Kevlar) mast that's 460cm, IMCS 25, and marked "constant flex". I bought it used with an Aerotech Rapid Fire 6.0 that seems to work well with it. I'm looking at getting a 2015 Maui Sails Global 6.8.
From what little I've found on the internet, this is a really old mast (1999 - 2000 vintage?) and was made during the time Barry Spanier was still at Neil Pryde. Apparently NP masts at the time were truly "constant curve" which means it -should- work OK with the MS Global.
Anyone else have any more information? (I've emailed MS but so far no reply.) |

back in the day when there was a MauiSails forum
there was discussion about those masts NP CK66 and MS sails
at that time they were saying those masts WERE compatible with MS sails
around 2014 MauiSails switched to constant curve ...
so, it should work, but unfortunately no-one can be sure unless it has been tried
i have done experiments with some sail and mast combinations and at times was quite surprised ...

Thanks Joe, your blog is one of the sites I found what little information I could on the subject.
Yeah, I'm hoping someone else out there had one of these masts or has been around long enough to know something more about them. |

2015 year have Maui Sails ( Unifiber chart) as constant curve, leaning towards hard top, but clearly CC.
The SDM. vs RDM will work better if not perfectly correct in regards to mast bend curve.
I say a 18 year old mast, has served its duty.
Try it in the sail, if it doesn’t perform, retire it.
My thought is it will work ok, probably not optimum _________________ K4 fins

Nothing worse than and very old used mast failure in a new sail. Because you got the mast used, you have no idea how it was cared for. This mast could break the first time you rig it or last awhile. Its been my luck that when they break, the mast splinters and rips the mast sleeve. Worse yet is a failure off shore on a lake or the sea. Only you can decide if its worth the risk. Compatibility is a minor issue compared to the risk of failure... |

The mast is in use on a Aerotech, how long?
It could break, as could any.
Maui Sail is a 2015,probably used.
Ideal would be a new / used mast. _________________ K4 fins

Although I'm a big guy, I'm pretty gentle on my gear. I bought this sail + mast combo a few years ago and have used it only in light wind. I agree, a new mast would be ideal. I'm just not sure I can spend the money on one right now.
What about a new Chinook Epoxy (fiberglass) mast? I started with this sport back when epoxy was all we could get and we used them for everything. But I read some real negative comments regarding these low cost masts. How come? Is it that they're too fragile or not stiff enough? |

The lower carbon content mast should be more durable and less likely to break, and 45 is low. I owned a mast in that line during that time, a CK75 which was meant to have the same curve. I recall that it rigged up perfectly on my non-NP sails meant for constant curve masts, same sails used Dynafiber and Powerex constant curve masts, all worked well. The CK45 should work better than any epoxy mast. |

55 % Carbon, is the absolute lowest I would use. I think 65 is the lowest I have, and 310 340 masts, seldom use.
Low cost, could reflect low performance. They might last longer than you would care for. _________________ K4 fins
