high quality masts spring back the sail to its intended wing shape faster than low quality ones. every time a sail bends from chop or gusts, it becomes more like a flag, and less like a wing.

we big guys tend to hold onto sails in higher winds than smaller folks. this makes having a higher quality mast even more important. i think one should be willing to spend the most amount of money/quality in this order:

mast
board
fin
sail
boom
base extension.

if one is spending lotsa money for max performance, it seems as though this order of precedence gets one the most performance per dollar.

I'm sure you're right, but right now I'm trying to assemble my first new quiver + rig + board. What I'm currently riding is a huge WindSUP that won't plane and a bunch of used gear I managed to pick up for super cheap. Can't afford to replace everything at once so I'm working on it piece by piece.

I decided to buy the MauiSails Global, it was new / old inventory at 50% off. Hard to pass up that deal. Smile

Ok, this is a NEW SAIL.
I suggest still with your budget restrictions, at least rig the NP, and see how it looks and rotates, it could perform on the water different to land.

And again it could break , as could any.

If you purchase a new mast, I would not skimp . Lots of used masts for sale, most are not on their last legs.
