Three of us sailed the Stick yesterday. The wind was howling.

I had just suited up when I see a car come flying like a bat out of hell from the Bayview/Hunter’s Point direction. It crashes through the wooden fence and comes to a dead stop about three feet from the picnic benches. And there were people, including children, picnicking at the tables too.

I walked over to see if the driver was ok, but he jumped out of the car and ran into the park. The front end of the car looked like an accordion but the airbags had deployed. The crash had taken out a good portion of a tree along the fence (for some reason cars parked near that tree frequently got broken into).

SFPD showed up moments later.

The car was gone when I came off the water.

What a start to the season – the Stick never fails to deliver.

I didn't get any pictures myself. The weird part of it was that the people at the picnic table kept on eating - completely nonplussed. But what was even more bizarre, bystanders whipped out their phones to film the scene. As far as I could tell nobody was much interested in the driver, but in all fairness, he didn't linger long either.
