the only sail i have heard where S is suggested was KONA sails

I don't know why an S would be suggested in Kona sails... they aren't any different than any other sail. I have 6 of them... all the different race sizes. I have raced in 2 big national and international Kona events. And I have had many chats (phone, and face-to-face) with Kona sail co-designer Steve G.
Kona sails are an RAF sail, just one of a 1000 variations of RAF windsurf sails. There are 1000's of these out sailing... and they've been around since the late 80's... and still new RAF designs coming out.
Anyway, if some high end athletic, world champ has a little reason... to put that much tension in a batten to bend it into an S... well, fine. But I don't know what it is. And doubt there would ever be any overall improvement to a general sail performance, to purposefully S a batten. _________________ Greg

However, most sailors don't downhaul Superfreaks that much since those sails can be sheeted out to depower. |

yeah - my sail is an HSM SPF
and not a KONA
i thought i had read something somewhere about some KONA sail with an S shape
now searching the web ... here is something from HSM about the S shape
from the mouth of Kauli Seadi - with a colourful wave sail ...
https://vimeo.com/73740159
will see if i cannot find something about the Kona or other sail with S
maybe it was Severne sails ??
sorry to deter from the fun n fashion discussion - F2 ??
continued looking and YES - i had seen some discussion about KONA sails and the S-shaped batten - here on iwindsurf

Not really, it is a sign of an incorrectly tensioned batten |

Yes, this thread is about the marketing, performance, and function, of sail materials... and how they relate to the "appeal of windsurfing" to those observing it.
The side note that Joe brought up about Kona sails needing some S bend in the foot batten is interesting... but a misleading thought for 99% of the sailors. And is not needed in Kona sails or any other sail for the best all round performance. In fact, purposefully S-ing a foot batten will decrease all round performance for 99% of the sailors.
The vimeo vid might apply to a lightweight pro, who only sails and does tricks in the waves... with that uncommon 3 batten wave sail. This weird anomaly shouldn't be applied to 99% of the sailors, unless you're like the guy in that vid, doing what he does, and using that sail.
My 2 cents worth, haha! _________________ Greg
