Get the mast that your sail is designed for. If you don't use that sail often the mast will last your whole windsurfing life with proper care. Pretty cheap per year and you will get the most out of your sail... |

430 seems very long for a 5.0, lots of 6-7m stuff rigs on them now. |
Retro 5.0 luff 424
Test. |
Coming to this late, I see there's already lots of good advice.
But since there's more info now... I'll offer a "counter-point".
Qwerty has a Sailworks Retro 5m sail with a luff length of 424cm, that takes a constant curve mast.
He says he almost never uses a sail this small size, cause where he lives it is lighter wind and he almost always uses much bigger sails.
He has 460 masts but would like a 430 mast which will fit this sail the best. He can't find any "really good" used masts in his area. And even if he could, there is valid concern about buying used masts from people you don't know. If you don't know the real history of a mast, you're taking some risks.
So he finds a good buy on a constant curve epoxy 430 mast. And wants to know if they're any good.
Answer -
I think you'll be just fine with this mast. YES, if you could afford some more $, you could get their 40% carbon... it's still a very good buy. And as you know, it'll give better response. But if you can't afford that... then get the epoxy mast. It'll fit the sail and will perform fine. For as little as you're going to use it, big deal.
NOTE - Chinook masts are made in the same factory where most the masts in the world are made. And as far as Pros sailing them, Chinook saves money by not paying lots of pros to sail their mast. This saving get s passed on to you. _________________ Greg

There is a 430 Chinook carbon 60 on the I-windsurf classifieds for $70. Buy that one.
Chinook carbon masts have the same curve ratio, ie, bend characteristics, as Sailworks requires for it’s sails. You can find that information on both companies web sites.
Sailwork’s sails will work with SDM or RDM, they sell a SDM for use in the Retro, the Joystick.

They will say it'll be ok.... that it won't allow the sail to perform to it's full potential... that it might be lacking in a few performance aspects.
But it will rig fine and rotate well.
And that... if it fits in your budget so you can get out and sail back and forth on rare windy days at your lake... then get it. They will say, "if not getting it" means the sail will sit in your garage unused... and you will miss out on a windy day a few times a year... that's silly. Of course, get it. _________________ Greg

When he does actually call, IF , he does, I might ask if they have a scratch and dent, umm, make that scratch mast they might be willing to part with.
The Retro, age would play into this , if its old, then it doesn’t matter much. _________________ K4 fins
