My experience with bigger RAF sails and Retros in particular is not positive. They just don't offer the range, stability or efficiency of something with a couple of cams.
I actually find waterstarting a larger cammed sail easier as well, but I don't let them fill with water. |

I disagree, cams are a complete annoyance, unless you need to plane through big holes, sail really close to weather, or for VMG. I gave up my cams years ago and I've never looked back. If you want pull for low wind
(and why else would you be on a huge sail), Retros have that in abundance.
If it get's to up to 20MPH, I'll ride a 6M sail (or maybe smaller). Popping
the cams up on a 9M sail is good for waterstarting if you can keep them up and your luff doesn't fill with water. I'd rather waterstart a huge Retro any
day.
But what I'd really rather do is ride swells up river on a 4.2 day.
Just offering a different opinion.

I think folks who live in areas of high quality wind really don't understand a lot of what the other >90% deal with.
Given the choice we'd all like to be riding swell upriver with a 4.2 but that doesn't exist withing a 3 hour one way trip here. What does exist is a lot of 8g18, chop and adverse tides. Prior to foiling my most used summer sail was an 8.5 (plus longboard) I'd be on a 7.5 maybe once a month from May through September. In these conditions a sail with locked in shape is a far better choice. |

On this we can agree, my comment about 9.5 was due to sailing 25 years
in Utah where the most consistent summer winds (if you can get them ) are
about 10-15MPH on lakes with small chop and gusty winds.

On this, not so much, although a "locked in shape" is preferable to
a moving COE, you don't have to have cams for a plenty stable
ridable sail that busts gusts without an immediate upswing in power.
But, I understand that you like that better and that's OK. ;*)

p.s. since the OP is looking for an 8+ M sail for a 460, a Retro 8.5 (or larger)
won't work well for him, but an 8.0 Retro could rig on a 460. |

A full on race sail is definitely not what I was recommending, plus his mast isn't going to play well with it.
Ezzy stuff seems fairly tolerant of softer masts and you can decide if you want the cams or not in the freeride sails. |

I bought the Powerex mast extension so now I'm looking for a good deal on a bigger sail plus a boom(most likely be alum chinook). Got 490 worth of mast now. |

Ezzy Cheetah or Lion 9.5 ??
again -- cambered sails will be more mast sensitive ... |
