I haven’t searched you tube, but hoping for input on beginner videos to email my nephew before he comes to the lake to give it a go. My beginner equipment is sketchy. I have nice Revo 4.7 with carbon skinny, an early 90’s ca. Gaastra 5.0, I could put an older mast on that and and older boom and either a Funride 130 at 72 wide or an old comet slalom 150 liter with dagger but only 68 wide /10 ft. Long. Maybe the comet with the dagger down will give stability, or try both?

Thinking of the older 5.0 sail because I dont want him punching out a panel on one of my good sails and the Funride 130 with it’s 72 wide stability. If I set him up with the Revo and Skinny it would be super light and modern though.

Videos is what I’m asking about. Something he can watch over and over before hitting the water in 2 weeks. He’s a big kid, probably 190 lbs, 6’2”. Knows how to sail Sunfishes and hobbies in Lake Michigan.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Get him comfortable uphauling on the wide board then on the Comet (my opinion) since it will be most similar to a dinghy.

Depends a bit on your nephew. If he's motivated and not very large, the Comet would be fine. You can have him practice standing, walking, and turning on the board without a sail - that used to be standard learning technique when we learned on narrow boards a few decades back. Can be fun if the water is warm.

He may end up needing longer before he can uphaul than if you start him on a barge, but he'll have a bigger sense of having accomplished something.

in latest Windsurfing Now 04.2 magazine page 16 there are some do's and donts

i wrote a post some time ago about starting someone on windsurfing
it has some videos
http://joewindsurfer.blogspot.com/p/how-you-can-start-windsurfing.html

lately took a fellow out in on-shore light winds on a narrow Mistral Equipe
with a small 4.7 old WindWing sail...
tried the Fanatic Shark 145 later in the day, but that was NOT successful
the old LONG boards - with a dagger seem to work
when i tried a heavyweight on a BIC Techno Formula board it seemed lacking in liters - his lighter buddy had no issues on it - so liters can have an impact too
just reading about the sport can help newbies too

Comet with dagger board down and old 5.0. Short boards are more unstable and it's only 1.57" wider than the Comet.
