|
|
I have NoLimitz 370 & 400 Original skinny 91% RDM masts and looking to fill a gap in my sails with a Maui Sails 4.4 mutant from 2015. I'm on a budget, so buying matching sails and masts is difficult.
Maui Sails changed their mast profile a few years back and I was told to avoid the earlier mast / sail cut because it was not constant curve, but their more recent sail cut is const curve and therefore should (could?) work w/ the NoLimitz masts that I have.
Does anyone know when Maui Sails changed their sail cut?
Has anyone tried the NoLimitz masts w/ the Maui Sails?
I tried searching the forum for this topic, but couldn't find anything.
Cheers,
Mark

I found my own answer. Interestingly, I found it on this website by searching google, but didn't find it searching here. I take operator error responsibility
The answer was in this forum topic post (2014 was when they changed):
http://www.iwindsurf.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=29923
From Sailwave: "Interesting inputs all, thank you. My main take away from all this and web research is that most sail vendors (including Maui sails which switched in 2014) are heading to constant curve in general with some subtle variation that may cause tweeks in compatibility. There are two just two main outliers, Gaastra and Neil Pryde. The unifiber chart is obviously out of date on Maui Sails. Goya sails actually claims they fit Ezzy masts the best even though the unifiber chart says Goya is more flex top. It was interesting to see North website claim such a broad statement that their masts are compatibility with Aerotech / Avanti Sails / Ezzy Sails / Goya Sails / Gun Sails / Hot Sails / KA Sails / Loft Sails / Maui Sails / Naish Sails / Sailloft / Sailworks / Severne."
I'm still interested if anyone has had experience w/ NoLimitz and Maui Sails. Seems like they theoretically should work acceptably. Doesn't mean that they will...
EDIT: For reference Maui sails had been 'hard-top' sails (per forum comment) until they changed to const curve.

According to Unifilbers mast selection guide 2013 /2014 , 2014 is correct that Maui Sails went constant curve.
No Limitz IMO should be fine, you might contact them for which mast or combo works best.

did a post on masts
http://joewindsurfer.blogspot.com/2008/07/masts.html
Around 2014 Maui Sails went from hard top masts to constant curve... They were saying the new sails fit the older masts and vice versa. Sailors were disagreeing and wouldn't you know it, in 2015 the company broke down - Barry and Artur left and started S2Maui sail company with stuff available in 2016. Because I have MS masts 520 and 490 , I need to decide which direction to go in the future. I also have a HotSailsMaui SpeedFreak 8.5 sail that prefers flextop like Neil Pryde. Ironically flex top sails like Tushingham are also going towards constant curve ... So, what does all this mean. Personally, I would suggest that if you have not started a sail quiver yet, go for constant curve... For now I will stay with what I have. An HSM SPF 10.0 m² sail also fits on a 490 and so, perhaps one day I will go flextop... For now, I stay with my mix of sails and masts ...
...
The mast bend curve for NoLimitz is posted on their site: its about 65 77% or 12 http://www.nolimitz.com/popup_mast_specs.html This puts them in the SW/Sailworks arena - for me. The NOlimitZ weblink disappeared - as usual - will start to copy and paste this type of data Also , people mix NL tops and bottoms to suit different sails - as discussed on iwindsurf ..

Why muddy the water when the discussion is Maui Sails ?
FWIW Tushingham ceased making sails at the end of 2017 .

Thanks all for the input.
I was wondering what Tushingham was. Now I know - see attachment.
