Hi Gang,
If you kite or sail at a site that depends on NW winds you have probably noticed that the North Pacific High's surface NW winds have been slowly fading and are forecast to weaken even more.
You may have also noticed the mention of a sliver-like North Pacific High and a wintry Cut-Off Low in the forecast text.
Looking at the first image below notice the sliver like "old" North Pacific High and mild MW wind along the Northern California coast. Also note the huge wintry low-pressure that is being steered by a wandering Cut-Off Low at ≈ 18,000 ft. It is this combo that has crushed the "old" NPH into a thin weak high pressure with weakening NW winds along the California coast.
But the same image shows a "new" North Pacific High forming north of Hawaii but far from California.
The second image, from the Euro model, suggests that the "new" North Pacific High becomes massive and moves towards us bringing strong N. to NW winds to the west coast.
ETA? This weekend. Watch for an upcoming blog!
