We had a great year at the Lake Washington Sailing Club. The windsurfing fleet grew to 27 members, we held classes, Tuesday night long board racing, had a field trip to O'Niel forebay & started foiling. A big bonus for us this year was having the club purchase a large storage container so we could keep sails rigged for the season. Drop in after work on the way home & be on the water in a jiff. Looking forward to next season & growing our sport even more.

Great video. Nice to hear you guys are growing our sport. Proves you don't need to be on a 4.0 to have fun. Next time I'm in your area I would like to stop by and join in the festivities... |

It can be challenging depending on the direction or strength of the north wind. The club sits on a peninsula on the north side. NW are better & easier to launch than NE or pure N winds. Folsom & Rancho Seco are better options on north winds if the wind fills in far enough east which it often doesn't. A typical north wind at Folsom could be 15 mph average while Washington is blowing in the mid 20's on average. The challenge is sailing up a narrow west channel on sinking boards to get back to the launch. Not a problem for you Kevin, but most people end up taking a much bigger board then normal on north winds as the lake is small so the chop never gets too big. They need the bigger board to tack back up the channel.

Folsom fan from the '90s, N wind and SE launch just upwind of the Marina ='s waist high ramps on N winds gusting to 25mph. They never let us windsurf off the W launch when it's windy but ok sub 20. |

Not a fan of Rancho even with the 70 degree water. Just too gusty and holey on N winds. Sail the upper T. |

I wish there were more clubs like yours around the country. Clubs with gear storage can offer rental gear to novices or travelers thereby helping to feed the sport and the club. Some dealers survive around the country through their on water locations and being able to offer on-site lessons, storage and rental gear. Some sailing clubs associated with colleges or universities also offer storage, rental windsurfing gear and lessons.
(I believe personal space limitations in European residences helped in developing their windsurfing clubs. In the 1990's a club in or near Chartres, France and one on St. Mary's Reservoir SW of London enabled me to windsurf once in France and once in Great Britain while on separate week long spring break trips.) |
