Looking at taking a trip to the OBX this April. Family wants to go North of Rt 64 since there are more “family activities” up North and are looking at a place in Corolla. I’ve always stayed down in the Waves/Avon area.
How’s the sailing up North? Looks like Historic Corolla Park is open to windsurfers.
Any recommendations on where to sail or local knowledge would be appreciated. I’m open to sound or ocean sailing.

I'm afraid you'll have to drive south to Duck for the closest sound
side sailing. Ocean sailing will be fine in Corolla. |

Thanks for the feedback. Where are folks launching in Duck? What are the soundside conditions - i.e., deep vs. shallow water? Would love to be able to take some beginners out, including kids, if conditions are suitable.

If you want shallow sound-side conditions, the Kill Devil Hills/ Nags Head area is a better choice than Corolla. Windmill Point is shallow for large areas and has easy rigging and launch. Jockey's Ridge is also a shallow option with a good beach but slightly more inconvenient rigging. Several ocean sailing spots are within a couple of miles. There is plenty for non windsurfers to do in the immediate area and on nearby Roanoke Island. It should be fairly quiet in April. |

Going out on a limb here hoping for some more details. Thanks to those who responded previously. It looks like there is potentially some breeze coming this Wednesday and possibly Friday. I checked out historic corolla park and it looks doable, but I’d prefer to go where there might be some other sailors. I’m open to sound or ocean sailing although the ocean is a bit chilly at the moment.
Are there any specific sites in Duck, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head where I’m likely to meet up with other sailors? Any specifics would be appreciated.

It’s funny to ask where other people are likely to be sailing when you’re in an unfamiliar location?

Harvey Sound Side Sports in Nags Head is a nice spot for SW wind. They have a web site you can check out. |

You are most likely to find other sailors at the Harvey Soundside Park in Nags Head (aka Windmill Point). Turn in at the Millers Restaurant sign. Plenty of parking and space for rigging. Sailable in anything from South to North There is also stuff for your family to do in the immediate area. |
