I am looking to replace my heavy air board. I am 170 pounds. Most of my sailing is done on cape cod + the boston area in a mix of small waves/bump and jump. I want to sail in a range of 4.3 - 5.5 (maybe push to 4.0 or 6.0)

The maui project 8.4 and the rrd wave one m seem to work well in waves and bump and jump conditions (according to the mags). Is this true? Any thoughts>

the best board for you would be something that can do waves and bump n jump well, a good ol convertible board as they used to call it.

check out the naish SuperCross 85. Also the Wave Quest 84 would be excellent. The SuperCross is more of a bump n jump board, whereas the Wave Quest leans a bit more to wave riding. however both boards are multi purpose and would handle both conditions well.

I face the same dillemma myself. I believe that its easier to ride a wave on a bump and jump board than vice versa. Very few live in real waves. Most sailors jump off waves rather than maneuver on them. Speed, early planning and weight are important. I am leaning towards a Naish Enduro 80ltr or a JP Freeride Carve 86. Hope this helps

Ive been riding a older Mistral 83 for a long time. Does great from about 4.0 to 5.3...my biggest sail. I tried the Maui project in Maui and seemed like a decent board. I also weigh about 170ish.

Later Jeff

This is an old thread but I thought Id throw in another line. I just got back from Maui and rode an 84 Maui project in 4.5-5.0 conditions at Kanaha. I was totally dialed in - enough float through the lulls and no tail walking when overpowered on a 4.5. Cut through the wierd chop inside the reef, jumped well on small surf, and jibed great out in the ocean swell. You could easily go down to 4.0 on this board.
