Migrant caravan: Footage shows children being thrown over 18-foot Arizona border fence

Quote:
An apparent smuggler has been caught on camera appearing to throw two migrant children over an 18-foot (5.5 metre) tall border fence between Arizona and Mexico and into the arms of their families. The video footage of the nail-biting moment was released by US Border Patrol on Monday.

The footage captured the moment a suspected smuggler attempted to help a Guatemalan family cross the border by climbing the fence. In the video, the smuggler dropped the family’s three children—who were the ages of 2, 7, and 10—from the top of the wall for their adult relatives to catch them from 18-feet below on the other side of the border fence.

Democrats erupt into laughter after Google CEO has to explain to Rep. Steve King that the 'iPhone is made by a different company'

Quote:
At a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai was asked by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) why his 7-year-old granddaughter saw a photo of the congressman with inappropriate language while playing a game on her iPhone.
Pichai answered, "Congressman, iPhone is made by a different company."
The Democratic staff table erupted in laughter at Pichai's reply, according to Business Insider's Joe Perticone, who attended Tuesday's hearing.
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-California) told the Iowa congressman later in the hearing that if he wanted "positive search results, do positive things."

Just shows how stupid those that were laughing must be, or that the laughter was directed at Pachai's response. An iPhone can have google apps, so regardless of the phone maker (android or apple) google has their finger in the door. Pachai was just deflecting to avoid answering the question.

what the probability of a google app being used by a child in question on an i-phone is about what 1 in 1,000,000 or more so better buy that lottery ticket and take off the tin foil hat, so the question was just wrong. If he would have said on a google phone then the question is valid.

Next issue is does google or apple control the advertisements on an i-phone..

trump is such an ignorant liar...

maybe he does not want other countries assisting us after we are attacked like 9-11. again why would anyone ever help again with the vile hate of trump. again right wingers support and endorse this hate which the world sees very clearly.

When Trump dismissed allies’ contributions, India was listening
01/03/19 10:47 AM
By Steve Benen
Quote:
The ongoing military conflict in Afghanistan is an international effort, though the United States has taken the lead and shouldered the largest burden. That’s neither surprising nor controversial: we’re the world’s preeminent superpower with the world’s most dominant military. We were attacked on 9/11 and we initiated the war in Afghanistan. Obviously, the American commitment will be greater than our allies’.

But Donald Trump isn’t pleased with the imbalance. “I get along very well with India and Prime Minister Modi,” the president said at his cabinet meeting yesterday, “but he’s constantly telling me he built a library in Afghanistan. Okay, a library. That’s like – you know what that is? That’s like 5 hours of what we’ve spent. And he tells it. And he’s very smart. And we’re supposed to say, ‘Oh, thank you for the library.’ I don’t know who’s using it in Afghanistan.”

Trump added moments later, “I don’t like being taken advantage of.”

Take a moment to consider how the India Times covered the American president’s comments.

India has asserted that its projects worth $3 bn in Afghanistan speaks for itself and has regretted the ignorance of American officials after President Donald Trump mocked PM Narendra Modi over the utility of Delhi sponsored “library” in the landlocked country. […]

It was unclear which project Trump was referring to, but India has committed $3 billion in assistance to Afghanistan since 2001. An Afghan civil society member Parwiz Kawa said that Trump may have confused the Parliament building with the library. […]

“India has helped to build Parliament, if that is what he is referring to or Salma Dam, transmission lines, roads and over 400 high-impact community development projects. Delhi is probably third or fourth largest single country donor,” sources said, adding it appears that the US President’s statement is a matter of poor briefing by officials around him.

The article went on to list a series of investments India has made in Afghanistan – it was not brief – none of which included a library.

How the world mocks Trump in protest art

Quote:
Americans aren’t the only ones with strong feelings about President Trump. Protest art and other depictions have cropped up in countries like Indonesia, Serbia, France and Japan, mocking and belittling the U.S. leader.

And those depictions have continued as Trump visited Europe this week, first to meet other NATO leaders, then to visit with the queen of England, and finally to sit down with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump’s critics in the United Kingdom have even created a “Trump baby” balloon version of him.

As Trump debates his own team, China laughs at White House confusion
02/25/19 08:00 AM—UPDATED 02/25/19 08:42 AM
By Steve Benen
Quote:

As trade talks continue between the United States and China, negotiators have reportedly begun drawing up a series of formal memos of understanding – or MOU – which would serve as the basis for a comprehensive agreement. That wouldn’t be especially notable, were it not for how Donald Trump handled this seemingly unimportant procedural detail on Friday afternoon.

During an Oval Office meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, who’s overseeing the White House’s trade talks with China, and a delegation from Beijing, including Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, Trump said he had no use for memoranda of understanding “because they don’t mean anything.”

It led to this exchange, in which the American president’s own trade rep apparently tried to explain a basic element of the negotiations:

LIGHTHIZER: An MOU is a contract. It’s the way trade agreements are generally used. People refer to it like it’s a term sheet. It’s not a term sheet. It’s an actual contract between the two parties. A memorandum of understanding is a binding agreement between two people. And that’s what we’re talking about. It’s detailed; it covers everything in great detail. It’s just called a memorandum of understanding. That’s a legal term. It’s a contract. […]

TRUMP: By the way, I disagree. I think that a memorandum of understanding is not a contract….

It was at this point that China’s vice premier actually started laughing, apparently amazed that the American president and the top American trade negotiator couldn’t even agree on the purpose and significance of an MOU.

Trump and Lighthizer weren’t even at odds over some substantive element; they were disagreeing over the definition of a routine phrase.

And so, the U.S. trade rep, trying to brush off the embarrassment of having been incorrectly corrected by his boss in front of his Chinese rival – and assembled journalists – came up with a solution: barring use of the phrase that Trump doesn’t like:

LIGHTHIZER: From now on, we’re not using the word “memorandum of understanding” anymore. We’re going to the term “trade agreement.” All right?

LIU: Okay.

TRUMP: Right.

LIGHTHIZER: No more. We’ll never use the term again.

TRUMP: Good.

LIGHTHIZER: We’ll have the same document. It’s going to be called a “trade agreement.” We’re never going to use “MOU” again. […]

TRUMP: Good. Good. I like that much better. I like that term much better.

The Republican president, who knows far less about trade than he likes to pretend, is routinely far more interested in what things are called than the substantive details. This latest example was literally laughable.

Trump is already the punch-line to jokes in Beijing. The Oval Office meeting that prompted the Chinese vice premier to laugh out loud at the White House team probably won’t help matters.
