| Yes, and also a complete fantasy. 81mph is about 70 knots. 70 knots is force 12, the entry point into Hurricane-force wind.
I live right there and the wind in the area was very strong, a solid 25-30 knots. Sensors showed gusts up to 38-40.

So you moved to County Donegal, Ireland?
If you click the link and read the article, the event took place off the coast of Ireland and not the Bay area.

BS, just like always.
DvCali is probably correct.
We've all sailed big winds, and gusts of 40 require sails as small as 3 meters. What size sails are those?
News always tries to sensationalize.

A pic taken by my friend Brian C., it's Cambria last Monday afternoon. By 9:30 that morning, I already knew it was too late, to go w'surfing, but some went anyway with very limited short term success.

That day at A.L was actually Tuesday the 12th. I got there at 10am and it was already into the 40's. A group of us traveled down the coast looking for less wind and only found it in the back bay which provided a nice 4.7 session until it went crazy. Later that day winds were measured at 45 avg with gusts into the 60's. Break out the heavy suit and hood as the upwelling dropped water temps under 50.

The trouble with 70 mph gusts is the need for TWO people to carry just the board, and 3 to carry the sail.
You can easily waterstart with just a mast, so attaching a sail is not workable.

Ya, Tuesday, when everyday is Saturday, you loose track.
I think the storm chase series will continue until somebody dies. I kinda feel the same way about Rampage from Virgin Utah. I can't help but watch it though.

It's like with fishermen ... the fish gets bigger every time you tall the tale. Add some extreme-sport-promotion and you have a very normal, if intense, spring clearing wind made into a Hurricane!
The strongest wind I ever sailed in was in Corsica with Les Glenans, when I was young and green. A coast guard verified whole gale warning force 10 at the Bonifacio strait. We were on some crazy small ocean-ready sailboats and retreated downwind behind an island and waited two nights for the gale to abate. A larger sailboat might have been able to soldier on but it was scary with foam drifting and widespread smoke on the water.
That's force 10 (48-55 knots). Force 12 (70 knots/80 mph) is NOT really sailable ...
