Looking like a great year to sail Lake Hodges!

The lake is nearly full and already open, though windsurfing pickings will be slim until the inland starts to warm up.

The big news is that SUP is now allowed on the lake! So you can SUP around if there is no wind. Thanks to the windsurfing community that 'broke down the door' for recreation on the lake that isn't bass boats or kayaks!

Plus windsurfers haven't caused any problems and occasionally helped out a few kayakers who got into trouble in 20+ winds.

Just wondering about safety for sup at hodges. Unlike windsurfing, a supper could disappear into many parts of the lake with no supervision.
Are they required to wear a pfd or just strap it to board? are they required to use a leash?(probably the safest way to sup(with some exceptions)-especially for novices who don't swim well). Wind can come up in an instant especially around the corner. Being separated from board would be the worst scenario. Just concered that one sup incident would make officials rethink all the watersports at Hodges.
Not trying to be Mr. Negative. just thinking out loud. I like the Idea of having the sup option when there is no wind.

Coast Guard rules are you must have a Personal Floatation Device either worn or on the board. Leash not required. They really missed the boat on this one, a leash is a much better safety feature than a PFD strapped to the board.

I saw a thing on Facebook that said they were charging $7./day to SUP, but only $2. to windsurf or kayak. True? If true, very unfair & crazy!

No, it's $7/day to windsurf or SUP. $2/day to kayak.

The unfair part is that SUP/windsurfers pay the same as a bass boat with a 200hp engine that requires a boat ramp etc etc. But the fishing lobby is all powerful. We have to tread very carefully and not upset them.

The wind can come up very quickly on some parts of the lake, so I do worry about inexperienced leashless SUP'ers getting into trouble. I have assisted a kayaker that got separated from her kayak in 20mph winds. She found out quickly that you can't swim fast enough to keep up as the 'yak disappeared down wind.

Its $7.00 to sup and $7.00 to windsurf for a grand total of $14.00

There is a petition to reduce supping to $2.00 like the kayakers. Go to san diego windsurfing on facebook to sign the petition. Please!

I think there should be one fee for all non motorized activities. sail sup windsurf kayak but that's a whole nother can of worms.

The fee structure is a bit messed up, for sure. It should at , the very least, allow either SUP or Windsurf , or both for $7.

Still, from the point of view of the city, they might understandably be a bit annoyed that after opening the lake to SUP the first thing the SUP community does is start complaining.
