Could be my biggest, 5.7, or the smallest, especially if it gets me on the water while most everyone else is sitting around waiting for the wind to change. Crowd free sailing, my favorite! |

I quite like a ~5.3
I can use it on my 95L Quad in waves, my 122L Kombat for light wind waves or in gusty B&J (that board has RANGE!) or throw a foil on the same combo for even lighter wind fun. |

Since I got my foil my 5.2 is my most used sail. I foil when the wind is lite in the morning. Then plug it in to my 96 Tabou 3s for afternoon windsurfing. |

Amen! Crowd Free sailing also my favorite and I've been known to pass up
pretty good conditions to sail someplace else that's less crowded.
But, all things being perfect and equal (and just me and my friends out),
I'd rather be on my 3.7.

p.s. my 5.2 Featherlite is really really rangy.

Sail size, schmail size. It's swell size and wind consistency that matter to me, and that combination probably favors a 3.7 or an unusually steady 4.2 day. My most commonly used sail is my NW 5.2 Sine Wave, which covers every bit of the range of a 5.7 and 5.2 Featherlite combined. |

True...Whats more fun, a gutsy on and off 4.2 day or a super steady 6.0 day on a smooth bay or glassy waves.. |

The windsurfing I like to do the most is race longboards. The longboard class that best fits my skills is Kona One Design. I fit the weight range in the Kona class for an 8.2 sail. That is what I use the most. An 8.2 Kona One Design sail is my favorite sail. |

Agree with many that the 4.7 to 5.5 sail size range, on a moderately windy open sea surf and swell day hits the right spot for satisfaction. It's better to swap boards (84- favourite 94 - 104 litres) boards than sails to stay in the 'magic' zone. On a weaker sea breeze day it will mean going up to a 6 metre sail and bit bigger (112 litres) board, but the sheer satisfaction can be pretty similar.
3.7 to 4.5 sail territory is not quite like that magic and effortless ranging about with the sheer joy of wind powered movement. It is more hectic, and is often more survival than pleasure. Fine for the challenge, and for proving something, but not day after day after day! (Used to love it - but!!)
The other lighter wind end is longboard and bigger sail cruising - compelling for some of us, and a different mind set and feeling of satisfaction altogether. Though again, the smaller sail size you can make it work with, the better. (7.5 favourite.) |
