|

I'm looking for one that is more like a back brace. I want my back held straight and rigid.
Currently running a T7 and my lower back is aching the entire time I'm on the water. I can't even feel any potential "lumbar" support it might have in it.

you can go w/ a hardshell harness like the Ion Radium Curv or Radium CS. The Cure is hardshell but still has a little flex to it. The CS are rigid.
I use the Radium Curv and like it quite a bit.
Also Ride Engine (kite company) was the first commercial hard shell harness, although the first one I saw was a DIY carbon hardshell by Central Coast windsurfer Mike Colee. RIP Mike (he recently passed away in a small plane crash). Super nice guy... met him on the HIHO way back in 2006. _________________ Kevin Kan

Same issue here. The curve isn't like on regular seats, it's curved vertically instead of horizontally.
However there's room to get in there and shove whatever old piece of rash guard rolled up. The problem is that it may move up and down inside. I twist it with the elastic bands in hope that it stays in place more or less.
If that doesn't work along with tightening the bar as hard as possible then yes it'd be time to try something else.
The ION is stiffer and more locked in but not really possible to shove things in there because the side openings are small. _________________ *NEW* - Manu's Windsurfing Blog, The STORE! |

Maybe ... just MAYBE ... your back pain comes from using a waist harness. They set my back on fire within minutes (besides their other drawbacks) after trying several brands and models many years ago, and I haven't tried any modern ones because of those other drawbacks. Probably as much or more than any other WSing component, I spend hours in shops trying on harnesses before committing to one. Like you, I demand firm lumbar support, and it must be locked in place or it does no good. Two harnesses of the same brand may look similar but have totally different back support, and which harness does that for your back may differ quite a bit from what harness works for me. |

Seat harnesses might be a bit uncool, but they're the best when it comes to eliminating back problems. And, if you're going to get thrown and rag-dolled, I'll go with a seat harness every time. Also, a seat harness will never ride up. So many positives. They even cost less.
All you have to do is be a bit uncool. |

Emailed Maui Sails about their seat harness. Here's his reply:

the waist is much better. the seat goes around your backside, not your back. they have very different uses. unless you are racing, i would recommend the waist harness always. you will become a better sailor using the waist.

One man's opinion in a sea of users.
I own at least 5 waist harness's from 3 different companies. I only use a seat harness. I'm 70 and considered advanced except for freestyle and foiling. |
