PragerU, short for Prager University, is an American non-profit organization that creates videos on various political, economic and philosophical topics from a conservative or right-wing[1] perspective. The videos are posted on YouTube and usually feature a speaker who lectures for about five minutes.[2] Despite having "University" in its name, PragerU is not an academic institution, does not hold classes, and does not grant certifications or diplomas.[3]

History
PragerU was founded in 2009 by conservative radio talk show host Dennis Prager and radio producer and screenwriter Allen Estrin,[4] in order to present his conservative views and to offset what he regards as the undermining of college education by the left.[5][6] PragerU is based in the San Fernando Valley and had more than 20 employees as of March 2018.[7]

Two of PragerU's largest donors are the hydraulic fracturing billionaires Dan and Farris Wilks.[7] Two members of the Wilks family are on PragerU's board.[7] The organization has a $10 million annual budget, of which it spends more than 40% on marketing.[7]

Cubs’ co-owners supporting Brett Kavanaugh through super PAC
Bill Baer
,NBC Sports•October 1, 2018

Quote:
In 2016, J. Joe Ricketts — the father of Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts and co-owner Todd — gave financial aid to an anti-Hillary Clinton super PAC called “Future45.” Todd later gained control of Future45 as well as another super PAC called “45committee.” As of late September 2016, Politico reported that Todd helped raise more than $30 million in support of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

45committee is now playing an ad in support of Judge Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s nominee to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court, according to Politico’s Shia Kapos. Kavanaugh has been accused of sexual assault by Christine Blasey Ford. Per Kapos, 45committee spent $650,000 for the one-minute ad which praises Kavanaugh’s “honor, integrity and strong moral character.”

We have heard the phrase “stick to sports” so often, particularly since 2016 when former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick protested police violence by kneeling during the national anthem. We haven’t heard that same clarion call when it comes to sports team owners and politics. Sports team owners are involved on a grander scale, particularly when it comes to money and influence.

Dialysis companies spend $111 million to kill ballot measure

Quote:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Dialysis companies have contributed an extraordinary $111 million and counting to defeat a California ballot initiative that would cap their profits, the most any one side has spent on a U.S. ballot issue since at least 2002.

A $5 million donation from this week from dialysis provider Fresenius Medical Care pushed the anti-Proposition 8 campaign's total past the $109 million pharmaceutical companies spent two years ago to defeat a measure limiting prescription drug costs. More than $70 million has been spent on television and radio ads as well as consulting services in the last two months.

When corporate profits are at stake, campaign spending often balloons, said Kati Phillips of California Common Cause, which advocates campaign finance reform.

"Health care measures are expensive," she said. "There's a lot of money to be made off of sick people."

Dialysis companies make roughly $3 billion in annual profits from their California operations, according to nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office.

Land O'Lakes Withdraws Support For White Supremacist GOP Congressman Steve King
HuffPost
Sara Boboltz
,HuffPost•October 30, 2018
Land O’Lakes, the Minnesota-based dairy giant, announced Tuesday it will not make any further campaign contributions to Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), who just last week detailed his white nationalist worldview in an interview with a far-right publication.

“We take our civic responsibility seriously, want our contributions to be a positive force for good and also seek to ensure that recipients of our contributions uphold our company’s values,” the company said in a statement. “On that basis, we have determined that our PAC will no longer support Rep. Steve King moving forward.”

King is one of dozens of Republicans and Democrats the Land O’Lakes PAC has supported in 2018. The PAC has spent more than $400,000 in the midterms so far, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. It has given $2,500 to King, whose campaign has spent more than $680,000 so far.

The dairy company is not the first to drop its support for the congressman, who is running against Democratic challenger J.D. Scholten in the November midterm elections. Similarly, technology corporation Intel told employees in an internal email that it would no longer donate to King’s re-election campaign after looking into his public statements and determining that “they conflict with Intel values.”

How one accountant links Whitaker's nonprofit to network of dark money groups

Quote:
The offices of the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT), the nonprofit once headed by acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, are located at a shared workspace on K Street in Washington, D.C., a couple blocks from the White House. FACT has used the address since 2014 on each of its publicly available tax returns. Yet, in all those years, the organization never reported hiring any employees to work there, and its current executive director works at a law firm in Des Moines, Iowa.

Who funds FACT is unclear, because it relies on “dark money,” funding from anonymous donors who pursue political agendas. What little information is available about FACT’s finances can be gleaned from its publicly released 990 tax filings, which show that the nonprofit paid Whitaker more than a million dollars over his three-year tenure there. FACT’s funding is collected by another nonprofit, Donors Trust, and then sent on anonymously.

In recent weeks, FACT, which public records show has connections to a number of other conservative groups through the same family of activists, has drawn renewed attention to the role of dark money. Yet one important link among these nonprofits has largely escaped notice — the accountant who prepared the nonprofit’s tax returns.

Thomas Raymond Conlon, the Maryland accountant responsible for the tax returns filed by Whitaker’s former nonprofit, is also linked to other prominent conservative organizations funded by dark money and whose only public face as an organization is often a UPS box or virtual office in the Washington, D.C., area. Conlon, whose own accounting business has been penalized for failing to file tax returns, has created a paper trail with notable errors in his work for some of those groups, according to public records reviewed by Yahoo News.

The five largest publicly listed oil and gas majors have spent $1 billion since the 2015 Paris climate deal on public relations or lobbying that is "overwhelmingly in conflict" with the landmark accord's goals, a watchdog said Friday.

Despite outwardly committing to support the Paris agreement and its aim to limit global temperature rises, ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron, BP and Total spend a total of $200 million a year on efforts "to operate and expand fossil fuel operations," according to InfluenceMap, a pro-transparency monitor.

Republicans warn drug companies not to cooperate with investigation

04/10/19 08:00 AM
By Steve Benen
Quote:
Earlier this year, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee took an interest in how the pharmaceutical industry sets prices on prescription medications, and Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) reached out to the major drug companies for information. None of this was especially surprising – it’s an important issue, of concern to millions of Americans, and it’s understandable that the committee would seek answers.

What’s surprising, however, is how two of the panel’s far-right members responded to the effort. BuzzFeed reported this week:

In an unusual move, House Republicans are warning drug companies against complying with a House investigation into drug prices.

Republicans on the House Oversight Committee sent letters to a dozen CEOs of major drug companies warning that information they provide to the committee could be leaked to the public by Democratic chair Elijah Cummings in an effort to tank their stock prices.

I’m not aware of anything like this ever happening before. Two members of Congress, in effect, have taken steps to undermine their own committee’s investigation of a private industry.

We’ve seen Republicans reach out to a foreign country’s leaders in the hopes of sabotaging nuclear talks, and we’ve seen Republicans reach out to sports leagues in the hopes of discouraging Americans from getting health care coverage, but Republicans warning an industry about cooperating with their own branch of government’s investigation seems entirely new.

Republicans Speed Past Democrats in Fundraising

Quote:
THE MAIN FUNDRAISING arm for the Republican Party pulled in more than twice as much as its Democratic counterpart in April, raising $15.9 million and far outpacing the $6.5 million collected by the Democratic National Committee.

Quote:
Elite conservative donors also contributed heavily to Republicans in April. The RNC received $710,000 from Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein. Richard Uihlein is the founder of a shipping supply company and a multimillion-dollar supporter of Republican candidates and super PACs. The GOP also received $248,000 from Steve Wynn, the casino magnate and former RNC finance chairman.
