Hi,
I have a 2016 Mauisails titan gsx 7.0m I'm wondering if I can run on an RDM mast. I've been running it on an SDM without any problems but i have a newer nicer RDM mast of same size. it's just too enticing to be able to take one mast out for my 5.8-7.0 sails.
Any recommendations or rules of thumb in general for rdm/sdm and cam sails?
Some sails seem to have a specification of rdm or sdm. this is not one of those sails. does that imply cross-compatibility?
thanks! |

Really depends on the camps. You can eyeball where the cams are sitting on the mast, take the cams out of the sail and test them against the mast. If they roll nicely around, they good to go (given that the mast stiffness and all the other related bla-bla-bla are matching). If they are grinding against the mast, there is no compatibility. I'm not familiar with Mauisails and do not know if they provide various cams. Ezzy does, each cammed sail comes with a bunch of cam pockets and cams, so you can select the right combination.

Another problem you may encounter trying to rig the sail on a skinny is that the cams pop off easily. Sails that support both SDM and RDM usually come with two sets of cams. |

OTOH, it's nice not to have to tear down the 7.0 to rig the 5.8. |

Is it a 430 or 460? |

Try it.
If the cams are located on the sail, you get under rotation but it works.
If the cams don't fit the mast diameter you get more wear.
If the cams fit and are on the batten, it might work if the battens are 1.5" longer than what's needed for STM. |

try it and see what happens. the Titans were designed around SDMs, so you may not get enough cam pressure with an RDM. Big RDMs sometimes suffer from being too soft in the bottom, so you might get less profile/shape down low.
if you're industrious, you can also possibly fashion some adapters to make the cams fit your RDM or 3D print some new ones. _________________ Kevin Kan

Top Windwing sponsored sailors back in the early '90's put RDM's into their race 4 cams and gained in all performance criteria. |
