Just another way Trump dismantles public health protections:

Iran has taken further steps away from its crumbling nuclear deal with world powers by announcing it is doubling the number of its advanced centrifuges, calling the move a direct result of the United States' withdrawal from the agreement last year.

As well as operating twice as many advanced centrifuges banned by the 2015 accord, Tehran is working on a prototype that is 50 times faster than those allowed by the deal, Akbar Salehi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, said on Monday.

Iraq wants foreign troops out after air strike; Trump threatens sanctions

Quote:
By Ahmed Rasheed, Ahmed Aboulenein and Jeff Mason

BAGHDAD/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Iraq's parliament called on Sunday for U.S. and other foreign troops to leave as a backlash grows against the U.S. killing of a top Iranian general, and President Donald Trump doubled down on threats to target Iranian cultural sites if Tehran retaliates.

Deepening a crisis that has heightened fears of a major Middle East conflagration, Iran said it was taking another step back from commitments under a 2015 nuclear deal with six major powers.

Iran's most prominent general, Qassem Soleimani, was killed on Friday in a U.S. drone strike on his convoy at Baghdad airport, an attack that carried U.S.-Iranian hostilities into uncharted waters.

An Iranian government minister denounced Trump as a "terrorist in a suit" after the U.S. president sent a series of Twitter posts on Saturday threatening to hit 52 Iranian sites, including targets important to Iranian culture, if Tehran attacks Americans or U.S. assets to avenge Soleimani's death.

Talking to reporters aboard Air Force One on the way to Washington from Florida on Sunday evening, Trump stood by those comments.

"They're allowed to kill our people. They're allowed to torture and maim our people. They're allowed to use roadside bombs and blow up our people. And we're not allowed to touch their cultural sites? It doesn't work that way," he said.

Democratic critics of the Republican president have said Trump was reckless in authorizing the strike, and some said his comments about targeting cultural sites amounted to threats to commit war crimes. Many asked why Soleimani, long seen as a threat by U.S. authorities, had to be killed now.

Republicans in Congress have generally backed Trump's move.

Trump also threatened sanctions against Iraq and said that if U.S. troops were required to leave the country, Iraq's government would have to pay Washington for the cost of a "very extraordinarily expensive" air base there.

He said if Iraq asked U.S. forces to leave on an unfriendly basis, "we will charge them sanctions like they've never seen before ever. It'll make Iranian sanctions look somewhat tame."

The Iraqi parliament passed a resolution calling for an end to all foreign troop presence, reflecting the fears of many in Iraq that Friday's strike could engulf them in another war between two bigger powers long at odds in Iraq and across the region.

While such resolutions are not binding on the government, this one is likely to be heeded: Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi had earlier called on parliament to end foreign troop presence as soon as possible.

Iran and the United States have been competing for clout in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein.

VOTE ON FOREIGN TROOPS

Before Trump's comments to reporters, a State Department spokeswoman said the United States was waiting for clarification of the legal nature and impact of the resolution, and strongly urged Iraqi leaders to reconsider the importance of the two nations' ongoing economic and security relationship.

Some 5,000 U.S. troops remain in Iraq, most in an advisory role.

Abdul Mahdi said that despite the "internal and external difficulties" the country might face, canceling its request for help from U.S.-led coalition military forces "remains best for Iraq on principle and practically."

He said he had been scheduled to meet Soleimani the day he was killed, and that the general had been due to deliver an Iranian response to a message from Saudi Arabia that Abdul Mahdi had earlier passed to Tehran. Sunni Muslim Saudi Arabia and Shi'ite Iran had been about to "reach a breakthrough over the situation in Iraq and the region", Abdul Mahdi said.

After U.S. kills Suleimani, Iran announces it will no longer abide by limits of 2015 nuclear deal

Quote:
Responding to the assassination of top military leader Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani, Iran has now announced that it is ending all remaining limits on nuclear fuel enrichment described in the 2015 international agreement intended to preclude Iranian development of nuclear weapons.

The New York Times cites an Iranian government release: “The Islamic Republic of Iran will end its final limitations in the nuclear deal, meaning the limitation in the number of centrifuges. Therefore Iran’s nuclear program will have no limitations in production including enrichment capacity and percentage and number of enriched uranium and research and expansion.”

Iran is not fully ending the 2015 nuclear deal; it will continue to allow IAEA inspectors in its facilities. But it will no longer agree to limit its nuclear fuel production in quantity or enrichment. This could allow, if Iran so desired, to rapidly escalate its nuclear program.

The Trump administration had already declared the multilateral 2015 nuclear deal between Iran, the United States and other nations to be null and void, imposing new economic sanctions in an attempt to force Iran into new negotiations; other signing nations have attempted to keep the 2015 agreement intact, despite continued administration threats against nations unwilling to enforce the newly demanded sanctions.

Fox News panels are waging debates over Sanders' proposed bill to require that Trump must get Congress's authorization before declaring war on Iran.

Frucking idiots. RTFM. That's already in the Constitution. Nobody denies that.

But there's no way in hell a president has to even TELL Pelosi or Schumer or Schifface, let alone get their GD permission, when blowing something or someone up to save American lives. Soleimani has killed enough Americans awreddy, REPORTEDLY (or is that just more BS from the Bushhawks leftovers?) was actively planning to kill more very soon. Trump etched a line on the pavement, warned the world's terrorists of dire consequences if they crossed it, and did exactly what he said he'd do. It's about damned time we had a leader with the balls to follow through with his promises rather than bowing to our enemies and paying them billions in taxpayers' cash.

Disagree? RTFC. And explain to us where your outrage was when this headline blared:
[President] "launches 2,800 strikes on Iraq, Syria without congressional approval; Nearly 3,000 strikes in Iraq and Syria to date"

That was on April 27, 2015, and you can guess who was president then.

Take a deep breath dude, sounds like you're about to keel over...Let me give you a little lesson on partisan politics. Whenever an act of war occurs, the opposition party in the US squawks. In 1998, it was the Rethugs whining when Clinton attacked targets in the Middle East, and as you stated the Obama drone strikes were criticized daily. So, yes expect more complaining/criticizing of Trump's moves, it's called democracy, sorry you hate it so much...

We owe the Iranians nothing, they have chose to be international thugs for decades and need a beat down...

Its understandable you'd be partisan , I get it. I'm not a foreign policy expert, so I rarely chime in. I do think its funny that Trump is praising the intelligence community in providing the data to hit the General, after blasting away for three years...

And to be fair, if Obama did the exact same thing, Republicans would be lighting him up just as Trump did in 2011, even though he didn't order any hits on Iran...

Pretty Interesting:

Good article. But we need to take Thomas Friedman with a grain of salt—and to know that the stooges would neither read him, nor think about what he writes.

The purpose of the diplomatic efforts during Obama’s tenure was to create a safe path for the ascendance of more moderate views in Iran. I think Friedman is right that it didn’t happen, and the fundamental corruption of the regime made it unlikely if not impossible. I’m not sure that Obama was naive as much as it seemed like the best of bad choices. In so far as it went, the nuclear deal was a good deal—but many will throw away the good because it is not the perfect.

I suspect that Trump has played into the Ayatollah’s hands, becoming the symbol that unites the country and shushes moderates. We shall see.
